Official Fan Page of Morehouse 150th Anniversary History Project
In 2017, Morehouse College will commemorate and celebrate its 150th anniversary. In the century and a half that “Dear Old Morehouse” has existed, the College has produced thousands of men who have contributed to world society in every way imaginable. Indeed, the names of the men who have been major players on the world stage are legion, but we should never lose sight of the thousands of Morehouse Men who may not be well known but who have, nevertheless, made important contributions through their professional work, community activism and service, and associated activities.
Building on the work of our predecessors, Professor Benjamin G. Brawley, who wrote a History of Morehouse College to mark the 50th Anniversary of the institution, and Dr. Edward A. Jones, who wrote A Candle in the Dark, A History of Morehouse College, to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the College, we will produce the following products that will be contemporaneously useful, but will have import for the future.
To engage Alumni, Family and Friends of Dear old Morehouse through different social media outlets.
The New Narrative History of Morehouse College
Using the methodologies and tools of the historian, the chairman of the 150th anniversary project will write a new scholarly history of Morehouse College. This publication will build on the previous histories of the College, but it will infuse as much of the new evidence revealed in the research and investigation undertaken by the Internal Working Committee and the student research assistants.
The Oral History Project
All Morehouse Men, faculty, trustees and friends of the College have a “Morehouse story” to tell. The oral history project will attempt to collect as many of these stories as possible. The project also will ask questions to help fill the gaps in the printed and written documents. Most of the interviews will be conducted by students trained in the methodology of oral interviewing; and, where feasible, the interviews will be videotaped. Some interviews will be done by members of the Internal Working Committee, and other faculty and staffers where it is deemed prudent to do so. All interviews, audio or video, will be transcribed and catalogued for use by scholars on our current project and by scholars in the future.
The Anthological History of Morehouse College
Using the paradigms and methodologies of their disciplines, scholars will write chapters on themes relevant to the history of the College. These themes will include, but not be limited to, religion, leadership, medicine, politics, business, education, science and the arts. The chapters will be edited, compiled and published as a single volume which will complement the updated narrative history of the College.
The Documentary History of Morehouse College
This volume will present the history of the College through the important documents that have been created as the institution has evolved over 150 years. The documents will be published in verbatim form; and, where necessary, documents will be re-created. The book will complement the new narrative history and the anthological history of the College.
The Illustrated History of Morehouse College
This book will tell the story of the College through photographs, graphics, prose and poetry. The coffee table book will be an edited volume and will use the highest quality production processes. It will truly be a collector’s item. This work will illustrate the narrative history, the anthological history and the documentary history of the College.
The Video Documentary History of Morehouse College
Using the lineaments described in the new narrative history, the anthological history, the documentary history and the illustrated history, a documentary will be produced that will tell the story of one of America’s important institutions, Morehouse College. The video will use archival footage, interviews and re-enactments to bring the 150 years of the College’s history to life. It will be offered to the Public Broadcasting System, television network corporations, and to cable television stations as potential pro-gramming. The showing of the documentary also will become an important part of New Student Orientation.
The Morehouse Alumni Papers Project
In order that we might get a fuller narrative of the Morehouse story, it is imperative that we begin to collect the personal papers of other Morehouse Men. These will include all Morehouse Men who have distinguished themselves, to one degree or another, and alumni in general who have a collection of at least modest size. Small but important contributions also will be very valuable to the Alumni Papers Project.
