Mountaineer Field

Description

Mountaineer Field, known as the "Jewel of the Mountains", was a football stadium located in downtown Morgantown, West Virginia. It was the home of the West Virginia Mountaineers football team. The stadium, which cost approximately $740,000 to build, was located down the hill from Woodburn Hall, and bordered by Campus Drive to the north, University Avenue to the east, Woodburn and Chitwood Halls to the south, and eventually Beechurst Avenue on the west. It was built into the natural valley of the area, and was a square-cornered horseshoe initially opening to the west before becoming an enclosed structure. The stadium opened on September 27, 1924 with a 21-6 win against West Virginia Wesleyan College. It held 38,000 by the time it closed, after a 24-17 loss in the 1979 Backyard Brawl to archrival Pitt. Due to the cramped location, it could not be expanded, and infrastructure could not be improved. Thus, in 1980, a new Mountaineer Field was opened on the site of the Morgantown Country Club to the north of the Downtown (main) campus, on what has become the Health Sciences campus. The historic stadium was razed in 1987. The Life Sciences building inhabits the area of the north stands, and the Business and Economics building inhabits the south. Where the playing field was located is still open as a field between the two buildings. At the southwestern corner, there is a horseshoe-shaped monument to the stadium that was erected in 2005.

We didn't win, but the weather was great for November and the experience was great anyway! The facility is well kept and easy to get around in. The food is good too letting alone the tailgating culture, which is alive and well. We met friendly people all over the place and I'm planning on going back with the idea of meeting my new friends and enjoying the game and the experience with hopefully a better result this time! My pictures are from the November 6th game of WVU and Oklahoma State University.
Took my daughter to her first WVU football game, and also took her to the WVU Clinic to meet the cheerleaders. She had a blast, even though it was cold, and rainy.
We had a great time!! The online parking color guides and seating charts were easy to follow. The entrance gates well marked with plenty of room. THE PARTY STARTS AT 7 AM GET HERE EARLY TO PARK.
Fantastic stadium great game . I want to thank Wayne R. For the great seats. The kindness of a stranger led to a fun day with my wife. Today was Gold Rush ny the way.
Very enjoyable day at the stadium watching the wvu mountaineers play and the band perform.
Watched my grandson walk across that great big screen to receive his bachelor degree in Biology. The Mountaineer weather was perfect and the stadium awesome for such a prestigious occasion. Proud West Virginia family!!
Really great time at the game from a non-WVU grad. Easy to get in and out of the stadium. Easy to find parking despite the topography. Good food selection, even vegetarian options. No view obstructions in the stadium, woohoo!
If you are a fan of football, this is the experience of a lifetime. Very reasonable prices too.
Came here for the Texas vs WVU game. People were nice. However, the food stands kinda sucked but I was there to see the game and not eat. Leaving after the game sucked! Every street was packed! They need a better way to coordinate traffic after games.
My dad took me to my first Mountaineer game in 1993 and I've been going since.. I've attended about 150 games here, and every one, even the losses have been memorable. I've also introduced a bunch of first timers to the Mountaineer field and parking lot tailgate experience.. There are very few football stadiums in the nation that stack up to this one, loud, rabid compassionate fans.. We bleed gold and blue here... And we trust in Coach Neal Brown.. #trusttheclimb
