MSU is one of the few institutions in the country to employ two full-time staff persons dedicated to overseeing health and safety concerns, and responding to emergencies abroad involving students, faculty or staff. The Director and Coordinator for International Health and Safety evaluate risk, plan for emergencies, and manage crises for over 3,000 student, faculty, and staff international travelers each year.
OIHS supports the safety of Spartans traveling internationally by:
Providing 24/7 crisis management.
Monitoring global events and assessing risk.
Designing and conducting pre-departure orientation for students and training seminars for program leaders.
Developing emergency protocols, travel
guidelines, and the best health, safety and security practices.
Liaising with international insurance providers.
Informing University policy related to international travel.
OIHS works closely with the Risk and Security Assessment Committee, the Office of Study Abroad, the University Physician, and colleges/ departments to prevent or minimize the impact of risks to MSU students and employees traveling internationally.
