Museum of Death, Nola

About

A museum featuring artifacts relating to the subject of death.

Description

The World Famous Museum of Death was founded in June, 1995, originally located in San Diego's 1st mortuary in a building once owned by Wyatt Earp. Evolving from the controversial art gallery the Rita Dean, founders JD Healy and Cathee Shultz realized the void in the death education in this country and decided to make death their life's work.

Reopened in Hollywood, California, the Museum of Death houses the world's largest collection of serial murderer artwork, photos of the Charles Manson crime scenes, the guillotined severed head of the Blue Beard of Paris (Henri Landru), original crime scene and morgue photos from the grisly Black Dahlia murder, a body bag and coffin collection, replicas of full size execution devices, mortician and autopsy instruments, pet death taxidermy, and so much more!

In March of 2015, the Museum of Death expanded its reach by opening a second location at 227 Dauphine Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans. On display, you will find similar substance as the flagship location in Hollywood, with the addition of cornerstone pieces like the Jack Kevorkian suicide machine! You can browse through more than 3000 square feet of taxidermy, skeletons, serial killer art and letters, crime scene photos, car crash photos, exhibits on terrorism and cannibalism, a great display of shrunken heads, and a gift shop full of specimens, t-shirts, and all the other goodies your heart might desire!

Also on display are videos of autopsies and serial killers, and in our Theater of Death, the infamous Traces (not Faces) of Death video, all real (not re-enacted) death footage.

The Museum of Death is a self guided tour, lasting approximately 45 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on your level of interest, but those who can stomach it may stay as long as they like. The movies run for hours.

There is no age limit for the Museum of Death, because WE ALL DIE, but we STRONGLY recommend MATURE AUDIENCES! There have been a number of falling down ovations (people passing out) at the museum (mostly men)... so we stress that you should be prepared for a good dose of reality!

Admission to the Museum of Death is $15 per person.

*Senior, Military, and student discounts are available with ID

"$17 + Tax per person, self-guided tour that varies from person to person in terms of time spent inside, the average is typically 45 minutes to 1 hour, though guests are encouraged to spend as much time as they like inside. Features death related artifacts such as letters and artwork from serial killers, antique funeral home and mortician apparatuses, graphic crime scene photos, courtroom drawings, shrunken heads and much more!"

I so desperately wanted to take pictures of all the items in the main walkthrough but I honered the wishes of the owners. Went to the Museum of Death in LA years ago but it was nice that there were different and unique pieces here exclusively. Always have had a fascination with things like this so I loved it! Certainly not for everyone though.
Amazing museum if you’re into death and serial killers. Lots of stories to read about along with artifacts from actual cases. Super cool. Only suggestion would be to have a working bathroom. I really had to go and I had to hold it the whole time I was there.
Wow this museum was awesome! So much serial killer stuff to read and look at. A lot of stuff to do with death. Truly a remarkable experience you won’t forget. We spent a lot of time checking everything out. The theater is very graphic and it is warned. The tv is showing dead bodies almost the whole time. I loved this place so much personally but it’s not for everyone. No photos are allowed in the museum at all. You aren’t supposed to take out your phone. You are welcomed to use it in the gift shop part of it though.
I cannot begin to explain how absolutely incredible this museum was. I could have spent HOURS in there, and been perfectly content. The theater part is not for the weak hearted, but is so f*cki!ng awesome! Loved it! The people who work there are just as enthusiastic as you, and make you feel so welcomed! DO NOT TAKE PICTURES OR VIDEOS. Respect the dead, and welcome the fact that YOU will see things not many people will ever see. It is so worth it! I plan on visiting the one in LA next!
Really fun museum if you are into serial murder cases and would like to see some artifacts or images. Lost a star due to being so small and when busy, can get a little tight. You must read a lot so if you enjoy reading, it ca. Take a long time to get through it all. The store has really friendly employees. They are willing to help and answer any questions. You cannot take photography or videos, as this would eliminate this museum. I fought the urge the whole time to pull out my phone.
Lovely collection of everything death and crime related. As a true crime enthusiast I thoroughly enjoyed the self guided tour. I could easily have spent 3-4 hours reading and looking at everything. Great value for the cost of the ticket. No cell phones/pictures allowed in the collection area so I have no photos to share. Bathrooms were clean and well stocked. The theater area does show a film and there are many pictures/moments in the movie that might not be suitable for children. Would recommend if this is your type of interest. I will be going again next time I am in the area.
I loved this place though I could see why some wouldn't. If you are a true crime junkie or like the dark side of life you'll love. View serial killer art and letters along with crime scene videos. I love my souvenir of a wet specimen of a heart.
This is an awesome place to check out if you like the weird and macabre. I really loved that there were details on everything we saw and that it's at your own pace! They also have really cool items to buy.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$16–20
If you are a true crime junky like me this is a great spot to hit up while visiting, I learned a lot walking through this museum, lots of reading, real life pictures and items from serial killers not sure if it's real or fake items but definitely ties into the creepy feels, took about a hour to walk through only 20$ a person but well worth it and the staff also are VERY friendly which made the experience much for enjoyable just be respectful of the no camera/photos while walking through the museum which I really respect that rule out of respect of the victims and privacy. After leaving definitely made me feel grateful to be alive. Stay spooky!
Warning: Not for the squeamish! Very detailed and informative with very cool merch to purchase! Staff are kind and friendly. Definitely a must see if you visit New Orleans.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$16–20
