Small but very interesting museum, Great activities for children. A visit won't fill your afternoon but it's a worthy diversion.
This tiny stand alone building is almost easy to miss. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in amazing history. From its beginning, this museum tells visitors all about the incredible history of Durham, N.C. The staff are polite and helpful. Donations are accepted at this free museum.
This small museum packs a lot! Many people who made Durham what it is today are cited, from many years ago and modern folks. They have an interactive display with many year buttons so you can see Durham across the years.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree

Fun place to learn more about Durhams history and talk to some very knowledgable ladies and gents. Situated in what was once the bus station the museum is accessible, small but full of facts about a fascinating city and its history. Opposite the Amtrak station and steps from downtown, this was my first stop and I was glad it was. I came out a lot wiser about the Durham of old but with some knowledge of where to visit during my day trip. Fascinating place especially if you love history.

This was a small museum and my husband and I viewed everything in 45 minutes. The 2 gentlemen who worked there were very friendly and amazing! They were helpful to answer questions and were more than willing to provide us with additional answers about the area since we were visiting from Florida. We enjoyed the exhibitions and especially the beautiful quilt hung on the wall. We will definitely visit again when we come back to Durham.
I'm grateful this museum exists. I found because I was looking for resources on the history of Durham. The staff was very friendly. I think the most helpful thing was an electronic timeliness of the city with large pictures.
For anyone who is interested in Durham, NC's history, I highly recommend visiting this quaint museum. Among my favorite exhibits was the "Faces of Durham," located outside the museum. The exhibit highlights a broad range of contributions including industry and commerce, medicine, and human relations while mapping Durham’s development from a railway stop to a booming tobacco town. Another favorite exhibit of mine was "Look Beyond the Windows." It allows for a 360° panoramic view of some of the most historic buildings in Durham, along with an explanation of each. Despite its small size, the museum was filled with quite fascinating history, and accomplished its goal: to teach people things they may have not ordinarily known. The gentleman there provided additional local history, which made the visit even more special. It made for a nice 2 hour visit as we waited for our daughter to finish work so that we could enjoy a nice family dinner on the town, which has so many fabulous cuisines and eateries you will find it difficult to decide upon just one. : Admission is FREE. Located at 500 W. Main Street, between Downtown Durham and Brightleaf Square. Website currently states: Open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 am-5 pm, and Sunday 1-5 pm. Parking is ample, with parking for Disabled persons directly adjacent to the museum.
