New Essex Theater

About

New Essex Theater is a working class entertainment, motion picture production and distribution firm based in The Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Description

New Essex Theater's mission statement is simple:
TO ENTERTAIN AS MANY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD AS POSSIBLE.

People often ask where New Essex Theater is located. As of this writing, we don't have a physical building. As such, New Essex Theater is more of a state of mind.

If you're watching one of our live performances, that stage is New Essex Theater when our show is running. Watching multimedia on our web site? Then your computer is New Essex Theater. If one day we have a movie unspooling on 12,000 screens simultaneously throughout the world, then New Essex Theater has 12,000 locations on that day. The point is:

wherever people come together in peace to enjoy our stories is where New Essex Theater is

Those of us of a certain age from The Lower East Side of Manhattan, whether it's The Hill, Smith, Baruch, The Ave, Rutgers, Pitt (not the schools), Vladecks, Masaryk or wherever know what Essex Theater is all about. It was the movie theater on Grand Street that used to show 2 new movies every Friday for the price of one. Well. . . sometimes one of the movies was second run -- but it was still a great deal -- monophonic sound, sticky floors and all.

Every Friday night, heads from all over LES used to come and check out the new Essex movies. No hassles, no beef, everyone just came through to chill, drink a little somethin', smoke a little somethin' and bug out on some movies. Where else could you see a double feature of Grease & Halloween or Escape from New York & Escape to Witch Mountain?!

There was a place called UFO next door that had some arcade games (I used to whip Spy Hunter in '83) and some bangin' French Fries! After the movies, everyone would go there and chill and hang out. It was good vibes all around. Back in the day there was a sense of community that barely exists anymore.

Essex Theater shut its doors in the mid '90's (the last movie they showed was Higher Learning). After an unsuccessful attempt to save it (a piece of advice: don't ask a bank for money to save a dilapidated movie house if you have never run a dilapidated movie house), I decided to keep the spirit alive if not the actual building. In 2002, I registered with New York City that I was Doing Business As New Essex Theater and that was that.

New Essex Theater is currently focusing on promotion and distribution, so keep checking back here for updates. It doesn't matter if you still live in the LES or not, or if you're originally from LES or not. We are all citizens of the world; let's get that community vibe happening again.

Peace! — Scott Duprey

I really like this cinema! It is clean for the most part; the theatres are not overcrowded - in my experience. The staff is helpful and management looks to be making an effort. There is a small bar/lounge area on both floors to wait for someone running late or chat about the movie with friends afterwards OR sit and sip solo!
I don't typically post reviews on anything non-food related, but if it's real good like this theater, I'll definitely do it! It was my first time going to a Regal theater as a long-time AMC fan, but wow, was I blown away by the service when I was greeted at the door! Keep in mind they check bags here! There's also a mini lounging area to grab food or drinks. The place is dimly lit with blue lights emitted by the digital movie posters on the wall. Pretty fancy! The theater rooms have limited seating, and they fill up quickly! My boyfriend and I were able to snag seats one row from the back, which wasn't even bad. The seats were reclining and felt pretty close to the screen actually! There was no craning of the neck even though we were on the right side. When we left, there were two workers who immediately came in to clean. They also thanked us as well for coming! We had a fantastic first experience here! Everyone was so nice, and with it being a new place, I hope the excellent service will continue to be the same! I would definitely go back!
Very nice that a theater opened in this neighborhood. Comfortable, reclining chairs in each theater. Wide variety of movies from reissues to latest releases. Occasionally international movies will also play. The bar serves strong alcohol cocktails that taste great. Highly recommend going solo or with friends to watch a movie at night and have a drink. Relaxing
Very very comfortable seats you can move the seats back like your laying in bed very cool and food was awesome it’s very clean 5Star from me
Love the experience me and my bf had watched the dragon ball super hero movie, we haven't been to the movies in such a long time due to covid and everything but the seats, qualify of service and food made it all better and the movie was great too. We watched it in sub and it was good and clear. We had back seats and I love how the seats can kick back you can be laying down in the chair and have the seat laid out. Great experience but wish they had move food options would make it 100 times better.
The theater itself is great, seats on convenient location, awesome interior, lots of auditoriums, reclining seats, they even have a bar where u can pick up a drink for your movie..... but the people who go there‍...... as if they do not have respect for themselves, popcorn is thrown all over the place, drinks are spilled everywhere, even on the seats, small tables are broken and barely hold anything. People, please appreciate others' efforts. They made this place happen so you can enjoy favorite movies. Please do not ruin it.
Had a terrifying experience here— sadly we were harassed by a homeless person as soon as we entered the lobby. The man was going on an unprovoked racist tirade against us, and we continuously ignored it. The security guard LET HIM UP the escalator after us without a ticket. The guard simply stood there as he followed us up, getting in our faces and yelled, began saying that we “deserve to die” and began throwing his hands at us. As soon as we got up the escalator, we went straight to staff, and the guy followed suit. We asked staff if they could do anything, and they just SHRUGGED. We ran towards the theater and eventually lost him. This experience left a sour taste in all of our mouths. After the movie, we asked to speak with the manager, and she said it’s not their responsibility and there’s nothing they could’ve done. We demanded compensation, and after over 20 minutes of refusing, the manager finally gave us two free tickets for the future that were to expire after a couple months. From my experience, I can see that the staff here have no regard for their customers’ safety, and will stand idly by when their customers are endangered.
A large theater, very clean and nice staff located right above some great food vendors at the new Essex Market.
While I rarely go to commercial movie theaters, I've always had a great experience here. Only one time there were popcorns on the floor right in front of our chairs. Otherwise, clean theater, friendly staff, and good image and sound quality.
Modern movie theater experience with updated visuals and audio quality. I love that they started serving beer here too. Worth it to see big "blockbuster" movies here where they lean on effects.
