Beautiful waterfront scenery with trails for walking and mountain biking all surrounded by mostly abandoned psychiatric buildings. When walking along the bluff you will see a trail heading down to the water which is fun and challenging. However, we discovered a set of stairs up and down the bluff after the hike down .
Had an excellent experience with the guided cub scout hike. The scouts learned how to identify different types of trees by leaves and the different types of plants that are found in the park. Our guide also went into the history of the park. There are many old abandoned buildings on the site that nature is gradually reclaiming.
Great place to spend the day, relaxing on the river. Follow the tides. Follow the river down when the tide is coming in, and return when the tide is coming out. Otherwise, you will be fighting the current, and that will not be fun.
Located on the grounds of the former Kings Park psychiatric institution this sprawling NYS park offers biking and hiking trails, launching areas for boats, kayaks, paddle boards all by permit waterfront views and much more. Nice place to see. It has old medical "diagnostics" facilities that has been abandoned a long time, and so they leave an uneasy feelings. Otherwise, the grounds and hiking trails are beautiful along the north shore of the island
Go at dawn or dusk, to catch a view of the many white tail deer, in the area. Bike paths. Marina. Walking trails. Historic Kings Park Psychiatric Center. Old architectural specimens still standing
Great to park and walk through the woods to the private beach of Kings Park Bluff. Nothing they can do about it either. Private beaches should be illegal.
This a nice Park. The pluses are the access to the Nissequoque River from the marina and beach. A great place for canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding with easy launch areas. There is canoe and Kayak rentals available for a one way trip down the river to Smithtown at reasonable rates. The river bank is just just a short walk with great views of the Nissequoque River and Long Island Sound. There is hiking available with access to the Greenbelt Trail. The grounds of the park are okay and there are some good views of water from the cliffs but the park is still lacking in amenities as it is being developed. The old buildings that are there have been attempted to be more presentable but they still show signs of neglect and the scars of their past use.
Very peaceful and beautiful place. There is a very good bike path but might be a little spooky to be biking or jogging alone as some buildings are overgrown with trees and may feel very deserted, even in the broad daylight . You can also go down to the beach from stairs.
Nissequogue River State Park is located on the abandoned grounds of the Kings Park Psychiatric Center. Most of the old buildings are still standing. They are enormous and ugly. The Park is still in its development stages. There is a salt and fresh water tidal marsh with hiking trails, canoe and kayak launches. There is an opportunity for bird watching. There are recreational boat slips by permit only. There is a visitor center with restroom facilities. The State needs to remove the old building which will be an enormous and expensive proposition before the Park can be fully developed.
