The North Adams Police Departments rank structure is as follows: Police Chief, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Patrolman, Reserve Patrolman. There is a Detective Bureau which is staffed by four Detectives. The Detective bureau specializes in investigation of serious felonies to include but not limited to, identity theft, illegal distribution of drugs, unattended deaths, etc.. Additional assignments and specialties are as follows: There is one Detective that is the full time School resource Officer. One Officer is assigned to the Northern Berkshire District Court and processes all criminal complaints as well as information requests from the court. There is one full time K-9 Officer who has extensive training in detecting narcotics. Two Officers are members of the Berkshire County Special Response Team. Numerous Officers have specialized training in the following areas: firearms instructor, Taser instructor, bike patrol, computer crimes, sexual assault, crime scene investigation, latent fingerprint classification and comparison, defensive tactics instructor, and more.

The North Adams Animal Control Division is comprised of full time Animal Control Officer (ACO) Carrie Loholdt. They are available for emergency calls 24 hours a day 7 days a week and respond to non-emergency calls Monday through Friday 8am-4pm. ACO’s have specialized training to handle pet and wildlife emergencies, investigations into animal abuse/cruelty, and animal first aid.
The Animal Control Division responds to a variety of calls to include but not limited to: animals being abused or neglected, emergencies involving animals, deceased animals in the roadway, barking dogs, loose dogs, unlicensed dogs, dangerous/aggressive animals, etc..
The Animal control division has one SUV and an Animal Shelter located on Reservoir Rd.. The shelter is operated and maintained by the ACO it houses up to 6 dogs, 6 cats, and multiple small animals. They hold these animals on a short term basis as typically they are returned to their owners or go to an adoption facility.
