The food is actually okay when you request the alternate meal as needed to replace the slop. A guy snuck into my room at night to try to kill me with blows to the head. I managed to escape while blacking out, and ran down towards the nurse station where the nurses held him back. They should have more staff watching as stated here and on Indeed. I was then placed into a calmer geriatric unit where the staff respected my wish to move from a room with a guy who snored like tractor engine and put poo in the garbage. The geriatric unit was eye opening to see how far people can degenerate. Overall a great experience but sad towards the end when my temporary hospital friends were discharged. The group sessions were great, especially Christina's music group which brings great light into this dark place. Everyone leaves this place with more tranquilizers than needed. We need to be tranquilized. Good job. The guy who assaulted me made many loud complaints at the nurse station previously and should have been tranquilized sooner. I agree with other reviewers that they are in no rush to discharge you when you've already been cleared for discharge.
I was here 6 years ago. I've been in a few different hospitals but this one was the worst experience of my life. If you read through these reviews from the families point of view and think that it's bad feel fortunate you didn't have to live it. They over medicate, you're treated like garbage by the staff and I know people say hospital food is bad but it looked like they scooped it out of the trash can. Getting any information about your medication was rare you kinda just figured it was to shut you down. I think it's a private run facility and wanted to keep you in there as long as possible and keep costs down as low as legally possible. They should be ashamed to call that a psychiatric facility. It was worse on me mentally than what got me there in the first place. Living with a mental illness is hard enough but to have people live in these conditions telling them it's gonna make them better is absurd. There are good hospitals out there that really really help and a staff that really really cares. This is not one of those. If you have friends or family there find a way to get them sent somewhere else.
Believe me I was so worried that my adult son was admitted to NorthBrook for M/H after reading all the reviews but I must say the staff and social worker have been great to us . Nurse had answered all my questions and concerns. Social worker Christina the best she answered all my phone calls even as I felt like a pest on how many times I called her . S/W had everything set up for my sons after care . I did not have to call anyone they all contacted me . The only issue I had is that when my son was admitted he was 100% negative for Covid . A day after he came home he started with fever and aches took 2 home Covid test and yes positive. But I don’t blame the hospital. Thank you to all the staff on 1 North . We greatly appreciate everything you all have done to help my son in his M/H . Now onto better health .
I won't be returning to this facility. I had one staff making comments about by dead grandmother and laughing in my face as a patient. They overprescribed the wrong medicine to not only me but several other patients and were giving out HIPPA information at the front desk. Food was awful the atmosphere was all negative and all they did was complain about not having adequate tools to take care of us while still providing the 0 service for the things they did have. I reported them to the state and hope you all got fired.
****10/18/2022*** update. TO DATE, NOT ONE MEDICAL PROFRESSIONAL HAS RETURNED ANY OF MY CALLS AND/OR VOICEMAILS. ****10/7/2022*** I am editing my review due to the fact that my family member was prescribed a medication that was not confirmed was covered by his insurance prior to his release. When he went to go obtain his 2nd dose on 10/6, he was advised his insurance did not cover this medication. Why would a hospital administer a medication that is not covered under a patient's policy? I have called Northbrook Behavioral Health for 48 hours straight and have left messages on numerous staff voicemails with ONE call back yesterday to let me know they will work on it and today I have NOT received not ONE call back. Therefore, he has been without medication for 2 days and no doctor or staff has returned my call to let us know what the next steps are in obtaining a different prescription/medication of the pill form on the injectable medication** After reading reviews I was very discouraged and scared as to the treatment a family member would receive here. However, their social worker Stephanie was always available to speak with and never sounded angry or annoyed at any question and/or concern I had. Dr. Esposito was amazing to speak with and made me feel like he really cared about finding the right medication and treatment plan for my family member. Thank you to you both.
This is a horrible place to send your family members! They threaten to take their patients rights away. I have called the governors office, congressman, health dept of nj, lawyers, and state due to all the violations they have going on inside the building. I continue to do so to fight for the patients rights inside the building and the mistreatment they are doing to them people! Extremely disappointed. They are there to help and they do not do that by any means! I have pages of dates times peoples names and all going on in that building. Its insane the stuff that goes on there and its sick!
Reverse discrimination. Some of the black women were constantly nice to the black patients. We had to stay in the hallways.and I have severe chronic pain. Neuropathic pain. In both calves and feet. Made us sit on the floor. The one room I was in was freezing. They refused to let me have a warmer room. Good hha's Will ,Torri were best.Tiffany was constantly nasty to me and others. Did not want to move to help anyone. Was nice to Cynthia, the black woman that was stealing everyone's clothes. They knew and did nothing about it.As soon as I left ,,my friend there ,told me she had my pants on.All of my clothes were stolen the first day. They refused to search her room for everyone's clothes..She was allowed to get away with stealing Good nurses were Krisha,Angela and the nurse who was named Angela as well. Danika never mentioned voluntarily or involuntary. I was admitted late at night ,did not have glasses. She just said sign here and here and here Stephanie was nice to me the last day.Joshua did not want to move.Don't go.A horrible experience.
A very terrible place...writing this review as the sister, my brother is here with us finally after 2 weeks. My mother was on the hippa form - she called repeatedly to get information - called Emily the social worker, the nurses station, Dr. McAndrew - no call backs. No updates. We called repeatedly. The irony is that we got more help from the patients that answered the patient's phone number than we did from staff. My poor brother witnessed that they just change blood pressure numbers on the chart. They can get away with this since they can always say the patients are not right. They are probably an underfunded - over worked institution. The sad thing in this situation is that the patients who need help are further traumatized in this situation.
My brother had been here for a little while. I'll just say this.......... If a person is mailing a set of keys to a family member, would that person put those keys in some kind of secure envelope? Because we were mailed keys.........in a regular letter sized envelope. Well, who the hell does that????? I can only imagine the hellish nightmare this place is. Psychiatric care is sensitive. Caring. Patient. Kind. Nourishing. My brother said it was everything except that.
My son was transferred to this facility from the ED last Friday after I took him there for altered mental status due to active Lyme disease combined with thyroid storm overactive thyroid. I’ve called on numerous occasions already and have YET to receive any kind of returned call or updates regarding my son, medications being given or any kind of treatment plan DESPITE my son having completed HIPPA authorization and consent to speak with me. According to my son he is being treated with heavy duty psyche meds I have the list but prefer not to publicly post, but no antibiotics or steroids which are the ONLY ways to treat the true underlying cause of his altered state. You can keep throwing pills at a person but if their MEDICAL CONDITION goes unchecked all of the psyche meds in the world won’t help. Additionally, I’m writing this review on Monday June 20th, 2022 and this facility is refusing ALL VISITS AND VISITORS DUE TO…. Covid??? Haven’t BOTH the federal and state governments remove any mask mandates and announce the pandemic is over?? All things considered I’m beginning to believe that this is a ploy by this facility to avoid any checks and balances kept by visiting families! Aren’t families an integral part of helping and healing patients in ANY setting, especially in a mental health setting?? Last, but far from last, I dropped off clean clothing for my son on Saturday. Today is Monday and my son has YET to receive said clothing so he’s walking around in the same clothing he’s been wearing since he went to the ER LAST THURSDAY! I called this morning and the unit admin told me that he’d been given his clothing. I then spoke to SW, Vanessa Curtis, who assured me that my son was given his clothing. It’s now 630pm and my son STILL hasn’t received his clothing and told me on the phone that the staff is calling him a trouble maker because his clothing is MISSING. I called the unit 2 center nurses station and the nurse who answered my call LITERALLY said to me, “Well he must Have gotten the clothing you dropped off bc he’s dressed right now”! Excuse me, but WHAT!?!?! YES, he’s DRESSED IN THE SAME CLOTHES HE ARRIVED THERE IN LAST WEEK. How does NOBODY notice a PATIENT not changing clothes for FOUR DAYS WHILE IN THEIR CARE. It’s such a SIMPLE THING and human right to be able to BATHE AND PUT IN CLEAN FREAKING UNDERWEAR!! Where do these people get their training???? FIND THE DAMN CLOTHING, IT’S THAT SIMPLE!! How is a patient able to focus on their mental health when they’re being told they were given something as simple as clean boxers when CLEARLY THEY’VE NOT!! I’ll be there tomorrow morning to sign my son out of there if he doesn’t have clean clothes in the morning. It’s sickening that a place meant to assist a person in their time of crisis has such despicable nurses and aids on staff. I have YET to hear from a Dr or from anyone other than Vanessa, who I’m beginning to feel just gave me lip service to shut me up. ETA- I did receive a call from the social worker Vanessa assigned to my son’s case. She was very helpful in explaining the things that have and have not occurred as well as providing for me the number to the nurse’s desk on the unit my son is assigned to. Hopefully this is indicative of proactive changes. Though even after this call my son has NONE of the clothing yet at nearly 7pm on Monday. I will update my review at the conclusion of my son’s treatment.
