Old Hastings Mill Store Museum

About

Vancouver's oldest building (circa 1865). Museum est. in 1931. Open Tues-Sun 1-4pm.

Description

“When it’s quiet at the old Hastings Mill store you can hear the past whispering to you…”

On very quiet afternoons when light dances with shadow behind the Art Deco case of early BC relics you might sense a presence. Is it a ghost from the Great Vancouver Fire of June 13, 1886?

The story of the Great Fire is just one of many connected to the Old Hastings Mill Store Museum. A huge oxen yoke and early logging photographs remind the visitor of when lumber barons reigned over the land. And there are countless artifacts from the 1836 steamship SS Beaver, “the lifeline of the coast” that met a watery grave off Prospect Point.

The museum’s other unique heritage items include Vancouver’s first city council table, legendary lifeguard Joe Fortes’ oil lamp and an original full-size Hansom cab. There’s also a fine collection of First Nations basketry and carvings along with an eclectic assortment of fascinating curios donated by Vancouverites over the years. Step into Vancouver’s past at the Old Hastings Mill Store Museum.

The iconic “Old Mill Store” stood at the foot of Dunlevy Street, East of Gastown for more than 60 years, before it was rescued when Hastings Sawmill was slated for demolition. The Store was barged to its current location on Point Grey and re-opened as a museum in 1931 by the Native Daughters of B.C. Post #1. Founded in 1919, the non-profit, historical society composed of B.C. born volunteer women, continues to own the building and steward its amazing collection.

The oldest remaining building in Vancouver is packed with lots of interesting artifacts and often has some new temporary display in the upstairs space. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. The builing is housed in a lovely green space very near the ocean and offers beautiful views of the moutains and the downtown core. This place is definitely worth a visit.
Enjoyed this free museum. They had historical items including the building, which was floated and moved to this Kitsilano Park. Interesting clothing exhibit upstairs. Some good books for sale. We found free street parking. Open on weekends.
Vancouver's oldest building that still exists. The building is current a small, but super cozy museum which is full of items that tell Vancouver’s history to its visitors. As a bonus, the view of the Bay is awesome!
A small museum, but full of items dating back from the early days of Vancouver. There is no fixed visiting fee, people can pay whatever they want. And I liked the museum's location as well, a nice place by the coast. Definitely worth the visit.
Good place to learn some history about Vancouver, about the great vancouver fire and early day
It's a house full of history. Don't miss it. Five stars.
Interesting museum and first post office moved here from downtown.
Wow... What a great find. Walking around today we stumbled across this cool looking old building with a "Museum" sign above the door. What an amazing collection of artifacts and photos. Well worth the effort to go and visit. If you like Vancouver history and want to see some neat stuff, go have a look.
It's quaint, can't beat the location, and a nice place to drop in if you are taking kids to the adjacent park/beach. I like that admission is by donation. It's not a typical museum, more like a mini museum, as it fits in one floor of Vancouver's oldest building. It's a nice place to visit if you happen to be in Vancouver, but I wouldn't visit Vancouver just to go there.
I visited this museum because I was riding by on my rental bicycle. Its a tiny little place - the oldest building in Vancouver if I remember correctly. The woman working there was so friendly and full of facts. I liked the woven baskets, fish skin boots and the drawings in the old magazines for women. I was just there for a short visit, its in a nice neighborhood and I recommend checking it out!
