Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome

About

Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is a 501c3 non-profit organization located in upstate New York dedicated to preserving and displaying vintage aircraft & ephemera.

Description

The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is a true “living” museum of antique aviation located in the historic town of Rhinebeck, New York. We present one of the largest collections of early aeroplanes in the world, as well as automobiles, motorcycles, early engines and memorabilia spanning the period from 1900-1939.

During our exciting weekend air shows, the Aerodrome turns back the hands of time and relives the early years of aviation (weather permitting). This colorful era is brought back to life amidst the roar of rotary engines and is great entertainment for all ages. The Saturday shows chronicle the history of flight with pioneer, World War I and Lindbergh era aircraft taking to the skies. If the winds are calm you will even see our 1909 Bleriot (the oldest flying aircraft in the United States) take to the air. The Sunday shows feature a World War I dogfight as well as barnstorming aircraft.

In addition to weekend aerial demonstrations, the Aerodrome also offers four museum buildings housing static displays of aircraft from the pioneer, World War I and Lindbergh/barnstorming eras which are open to the public seven days a week from June to October.

Mission

The Aerodrome’s mission is to obtain, restore, maintain and display Pioneer, World War I and Lindbergh era aircraft, vehicles, related equipment, documents, memorabilia and artifacts of historical significance while seeking to educate the public regarding the historical significance of its collection and the scientific and technological advancements that it represents.

What a great place this is! The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome has a fantastic museum and a great air show. The museum features the history of early aircraft with both real and reproduction airplanes from the early 1900's to the 1940's. The ORA has several hangers full of early aircraft. Displayed along with the early planes are early 20th century cars and motorcycles. They even have an early car made by Sears! Depending on your interest in these subjects you could an hour or more in the museum. The air show is both thrilling and fun to watch. It is easy to watch the planes from the ground and there were plenty of seats available. They have a corny humorous plot that adds to the show. The show not only incorporates vintage aircraft but vintage automobiles and even a WW1 tank. To my knowledge this is the only air show in the US that regularly features these aircraft. If you have any love of history, aviation, or just want to watch an interesting show than this is the place for you.
I'm giving this 5 stars because it's a great organization preserving some awesome pieces of history. That being said, if you're looking for some big, impressive museum, this isn't it. It's $12 per adult for four buildings with planes in it. There's no AC so the buildings are very warm. Doesn't take long to see everything. If you really like old planes, you'll love this. If it's not really your thing, you might not find it worth it.
We had a lovely time at the old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. We mainly went to see the air show. It was fun to watch and learn about the early aircraft that were being flown.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
Great time at a beautiful location. The grass runway was lined with old aircraft. Plaques offering the history of each plane. Old cars on display, again with their history on a plaque. Vintage airplanes flying overhead, vintage cars driving around, and the staff wearing vintage clothing - brings you back to the early 1900's! The 2pm air show was exciting, entertaining and well worth the ticket price. The open cockpit biplane ride over the Hudson was the absolute pinnacle! The indoor museum was pretty awesome too. It offered close up views of very old planes, such as a full size reproduction of the Wright Bros plane. There is a concessions stand with food and ice cream, but I had brought my own picnic lunch to snack on while watching the airshow. And of course, they have a gift shop. The prices at the gift shop seemed very reasonable as far as gift shops go. It's not required, but I'd recommend dressing up in vintage clothes for the full experience. We did and had a blast!
Fun day watching the planes. Would definitely return. The museum is also very cool. Great to learn about the history of aircraft!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$21–30

The museums were small but represented the Era well. It was very educational and enjoyable. I was not there on a day when air shows were presented. It was still worth being there.Visited onWeekday
Such an amazing place! If you have any interest in aviation history or just want to get out for a fun family afternoon, this place is great! It's more than a museum. It's like a time machine that takes you back to a simpler time and the forefront of aviation. I highly recommend going at least once for the Saturday and the Sunday shows. They are both excellent!
Loved everything, entertainment for the young and old. The air show was fabulous, one of a kind event.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$21–30
My son and I had an incredible time at ORA. We attended two air shows, each of which was informative, exciting, and full of surprises. We also took a thrilling ride in a classic biplane! Without exception, ever staff member was welcoming and knowledgeable, answering *every* question my son and I asked about the planes. If you're a history buff, or just want a lovely pastoral setting for a family-friendly outing, I recommend you visit ORA. There's really no place like it.
