Nice architecture. Pretty small exhibit space. I wouldn't plan a day around it. But definitely worth a pit stop if you're in the area. Warm, welcoming staff. $1.75/15 min at the parking structure. There is a cafe for sit down service. They should consider a small food cart for espresso & dessert to hang on the steps outside. Worth a visit!
Really nice exhibit that is constantly changing. The space is small so plan on a quick stop if you’re in the area. Entrance is free and parking in the structure is $20 max so not bad. Didn’t get a chance to check out the cafe since there was a private event. I would recommend this to anyone, not sure about taking kids though.
What a beautiful new museum for the public to enjoy. We went on the Grand Opening and even though we enjoyed a lot of the festivities I know many didn’t get to join in due to the very long lines. We came early and maybe that helped us however, our friends that arrived later waited in line for over 3hrs and missed the events. They didn’t get in until almost 1am and not much was happening during that time. No food or bathrooms outside for those waiting. I hope others will go during regular hours to enjoy the museum. They had special event parking for $15 the night of the event.
Beautiful museum! They told us every 6-8 months new art will come. Can't wait to come back. We finished the whole museum within 45-1 hour. The gift shop had a really good selection as well. Parking was free but I accidentally paid for it.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Waited a bit before checking out the museum. It has a cafe for light eating, coffee bar and a full bar! The 3rd floor has a nice outdoor terrace for kids to run around, kid friendly place. Ideal place to hang out for a little bit, even a good spot to work remotely. Parking sucks and can park in a nearby structure for 15$ all day. Or if you are doing some fancy south coast plaza shopping you can leave your car there and trek over a few blocks to the museum.
Free modern art museum by the South Coast Plaza and Center for the Arts. Came here with my parents on a Sunday and no advance reservations required. You provide your zip code at the front desk and they wave you through. You must leave your umbrellas at the front, and they put a sticky note with your name for safeguarding. There is a bar as well as food available. Outdoor seating is also on the second. Water fountains available by the restrooms. Paid garage parking or you can park at South Coast and walk. It’s a small gallery but you can spend quite some time perusing the collection. Overall, it was a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon.
Located in an amazing, modern and beautiful complex for the arts. Although not very large, the venue is beautiful and the exhibits were great. Free entry but the paid parking nearby is a bit pricey.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
I had a lot of fun and saw a lot of great art. I like the amount of context there was on the placards under the titles. It was usually a paragraph or 2. Which is just right for me. Art without context can become useless, the way food becomes useless when you put it in the sink.
We went and checked out the newly opened Orange County Museum of Art OCMA this past Saturday. It was smaller than I expected, not that that is necessarily a bad thing, but I did ask myself if there perhaps was a permitting reason for it being this small. The overall impression of the foyer area and the first level galleries was of stark and spare space. The 2nd level mezzanine gallery is a more intimate space. The building presents very contemporary architecture, with curvy white tiled walls contrasted with bare concrete finishes for the floors and stairways. The exhibition of polyester sculptures by Fred Eversley on the second mezzanine level was definitely the highlight for me. All very beautiful works that evoked a warm emotional response. The exhibition on the entry level was of very mixed merit in my opinion; a few pieces that provoked my interest, and many that did not evoke any emotional impact or interest. Of course, this is just the opinion of someone who has a long interest in art, but who isn't an art critic. But, I was a little surprised that for a grand opening exhibition this is what was curated. The third level features a bar/cafe/restaurant. Table seating in the restaurant encourages communal dining with large informal tables with the hope that strangers will strike up a conversation perhaps. We ate lunch there. The waitress was very attentive and friendly, without being intrusive. I was delighted that most of the dishes were available as vegan/vegetarian, but that you could add animal protein if you wished. A smart move in my opinion. I do hope that the back wall will be decorated with art sometime soon. Also the lighting in the dining area against the stark back wall was very poor. Outside on the third level is an expansive terrace area, at this point completely barren. It's early days for the museum, I know, but my hope is that in the near future it will become an area for a European-style plaza/terrace to enjoy food and refreshments.
This newly reopened museum by Thom Mayne’s Morphosis keeps the architectural trickery to the interstitial spaces and leaves the galleries mostly unadorned. The collection is full of heavy hitters and I saw some new names in the temporary exhibitions I will follow as well. The curation felt unfocused and piecemeal for their inaugural exhibitions which were several small shows including a “biennial” relegated to one average sized gallery. Because it’s not a huge institution or a very long visit, it’s hard to recommend as a destination unto itself, but a really nice museum visit when in the area.
