Our department offers opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate study in philosophy. Students can study towards the Philosophy Minor, the Philosophy Major (B.A.), or a Master’s Degree (M.A.). Undergraduate students can also take advantage of our Departmental Honors Program and our Pre-Law Emphasis.
The areas of specialization for tenured / tenure-track faculty members include:
Cognitive Science, Epistemology, Ethical Theory, History of Philosophy (including American, Early Analytic, and Early Modern Philosophy), Metaphysics, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Religion, and Philosophy of Science.
The department is home to the Center for Applied Ethics. It has hosted the California Conference in Early Modern Philosophy and the Society for Women in Philosophy Pacific Division Meeting.
