The Department of RGRLL teaches the languages, literatures & cultures of French, Italian, Spanish, German Russian & Arabic speaking peoples at CSULB.
Welcome to the Department of Romance, German, Russian Languages and Literatures (RGRLL). We teach the languages, literatures, and cultures of French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Russian-speaking people to undergraduate and graduate students at California State University, Long Beach. The department also offers courses in Arabic as part of its commitment to language education.
We are proud to include among our student body many future and current teachers, as well as future and current translators, editors, journalists, business people, geographers, anthropologists, linguists, professional writers, non-profit administrators, and numerous other professionals.
We have four Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts programs in our department: French, German, Italian Studies, and Spanish. We offer minors in all of those areas, as well as in Russian. Our commitment to educating teachers for the state of California is seen in our Single Subject Credential in Languages Other than English (LOTE), which includes credentials in French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Our courses also support related programs such as: Latin American Studies, International Business, International Studies, and History.
Our commitment to scholarly and instructional excellence is seen in the training the Department provides for prospective foreign language teachers and instructors K-16; future PhD students in French, Spanish, German, Romance Languages, Linguistics, Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies; language professionals in translation, interpretation, travel-related disciplines, and technical writing.
Our faculty members represent some of the best teacher-scholars in the profession. High standards are maintained through excellence in teaching, scholarly contributions, and active service to the university, profession, and community. The Department considers teaching and scholarship to be of primary and equal importance. We place a high value on activities that integrate teaching and scholarship, and promote research activities that combine these two important components of the department’s commitment to excellence in higher education.
