This place could use some air conditioning. The only bit of cool air is in the theater room. Also, people don't clean the machines after using them. I've been here 4 times so far and it hasn't be crowded from 1-4. Front desk staff is great. There should be more staff walking around. Overall, this is a great gym until my home gym opens in Manhattan.
New owners and new name for June 2019. The former Retro fitness gym at this location is now "WillyB fitness". I've been a member of Retro and originally signed up at this location. It's a very large gym with lots of machinery. One of the things I didn't like was the fly machine being broken for over a month in addition to the glute machine binding and not working properly. Other than that, the locker room was decently clean and the main floor pretty stocked with free dumbbells well, maybe another set or so of the most used weights like 30's and 35's would be nice. According to a recently sent out member email, the gym will undergo some modifications during operation, such as the addition of towels, Sauna's in both locker rooms, a new smoothie and coffee bar, hot water for the showers, and some new machinery, to name the most notable promises. I'm sticking around for a month or so to see what manifests. Other Retro locations may not honor current membership id, as the Park Slope location of Retro fitness said I needed to rejoin at their location and pay a month's fee up front and commit to a one year plan. I'm holding out for a bit.
The gym as such is good. Closes early on weekends 8PM as opposed to weekdays 11PM which isn't optimal because we used to go on Sat/Sun. They have great equipment and the main areas aren’t crowded. I had a lukewarm membership experience however. After using the facility for 6 months, I stopped going in December 2017 because I moved into an apartment with a gym; I gave them half a dozen calls to cancel, but got hold of the manager only in May. They seem to be making sincere efforts to improve the customer experience, viz. Benjamin who has recently taken over. To be fair, we were on a 1 year contract but there was no attempt to allow negotiation in such circumstances. I will make sure that my membership is canceled next month and update the review with more stars appropriately.
Talk about SCAMMERS NEVER have I had to pay the amount of money this place charges to cancel a membership at any of the other gyms I’ve been too. —-They CHARGE YOU 75% of what’s left on the 12 month agreement you automatically agree to upon joining. It cost me a total of 350 dollars to join and cancel my membership after 1 month This is including the annual year fee. I’ve been going to the gym for 8 years. I’ve been to planet fitnesses that had better equipment. I Stayed one month and when realizing that this gym was not only falling apart cosmetically as in flooring is warped an the padding is all broken into the ground, mirrors are cracked in every corner, walls have damages but also there are machines, that are out of service for the whole month I was there, and I have friends who refused to pay the fee and just stayed because they had no other choices but to stay there, say there still out of service. Half the treadmills don’t even turn on. A lot of the wire machines aren’t balanced so you feel more weight on one arm then you do the other. I mean honestly this place feels like it was built 100 years ago and never maintained . No maintenance what so ever . I choose to leave and pay the fees because I refuse to be held hostage but wow what a horrible experience. They don’t wave fees NOTHING. Once your in good luck getting out; with out sacrificing an arm and a leg.
Pros: Staff,Trainers, Smoothie Bar, $20 dollars a month Cons: Terrible Loud Music, Crowded during peak hours I really enjoy the staff at the gym here. They are very friendly and the trainers are extremely helpful. I have been taking training sessions once a week for a few months now and they are totally worth it. The trainers will teach you how to get a full body workout in about thirty minutes. I also like to hit up smoothie bar upstairs, and recommend "the incredible bulk."
I told them that I want to work out for only 3 months with no commitment. They said: "No problem", and signed me up for a year membership without letting me know. When I addressed issue to the owner, he told me to pay 2 more months, that I'm not going to attend and they will put off the payroll. Still getting called by credit union every single week, that I own them. Pretty much forcing me to give them money they didn't earn. Thank you, Retro Fitness.
Great gym. Has all the equipment you could want, with new things added all the time. The renovations lately are making the place look awesome. Staff is super friendly, and the trainers really know their stuff.
I am really disappointed with the maintenance of this gym. On a regular basis there is hardly any paper towels. The punching bags are all about to fall apart. Machines are filthy and stay broken for quite sometime. TVs on the equipment never work. There is a mirror that is broken and it has been in this condition for months. I guess safety is not a concern to Retro. If I am paying Retro a yearly maintenance fee, why is the upkeep of this gym is mediocre?
I just signed up and haven't used the gym yet. But I have to say for all of the bad reviews on customer service, I was pleasantly surprised when I was welcomed graciously and given all of the details on membership and future costs up front. They explained why each cost was going to come into the pipe and it makes sense. I am excited to get my workout on and honestly it doesn't matter what music is on as long as it's on except Creed...PLEASE NO CREED. Again I have not used the gym yet, but the one girl at the counter was crazy nice and very clear about what you get and what you pay for.
Decent gym at a good value for NYC. The place is pretty large, with a lot of equipment. However, a lot of the equipment is dated or has seen better days, but you can still get a good workout in. The men's locker room has a God-awful smell that usually hits you like a wall when you walk in. It's some combination of body odor, dirty clothes, mildew, and cleaning products that merge into something atrocious.
