I moved to RiverMead in 2016 and have genuinely enjoyed the residents, staff, and atmosphere that make up the community. The campus is set on almost one hundred acres with picturesque grounds and walking trails along the riverfront. You feel surrounded by nature, yet you are only minutes from Downtown Peterborough. There is always a program or activity going on. I frequently use the indoor heated pool for water aerobics, attend structured pool classes, and Sunday Performing Arts Concerts that feature award-winning artists from across the country. As a resident, I feel that my voice is heard, and I am empowered to make suggestions that benefit the community. I have peace of mind knowing that if I need more support, I have the guarantee of on-site care.
My wife and I have been residents of RiverMead for the past four years. We investigated many continuing care retirement communities, but the warmth of the staff at RiverMead stood out. We continue to be impressed by the helpfulness of all levels of staff. This spirit of helpfulness is part of the ethos of the resident community as well. We came here before we “needed” to. This has afforded us the opportunity to take advantage of all that Peterborough and the beautiful RiverMead campus has to offer. This includes walking trails right out our back door, and the music and cultural happenings of Peterborough.… There are a variety of dining areas at RiverMead and the food is excellent. Although we hope we never need them, the assisted living and memory care services are excellent. Many of our friends have a partner receiving those services and have nothing but good things to say about them.
We have lived at RiverMead for 6 years. Our experience has been 100% positive. The activities are varied to suit many interests. The new athletic complex is amazing. And the staff in every department are supportive and always willing to lend a hand.
My husband and I have enjoyed life here at RiverMead for 2½ years now. We love the freedom from chores and maintenance issues that is now our lifestyle. It is so liberating to leave on vacation and not worry about the house or yard problems that await us on return. We have discovered that this new-found free time has allowed us to do more hiking, biking, backcountry canoe tripping, kayaking, and travelling than we have ever done and to do it in in this recreational wonderland that surrounds us. The community here at RiverMead is filled with both residents and staff that are warm, caring, and supportive. We have made not only many new friends but also learned to do to new activities. The staff and residents alike are always quick with a smile and a warm greeting. It is wonderful to enjoy the complimentary morning coffee/tea/hot chocolate with both residents and staff in the common area. My nursing career in Home Health and Hospice has taught me to treasure time with loved ones. It is such a pleasure to see couples that can spend time with each other daily enjoying walks, meals, activities, and companionship despite having to live separately although easily within walking distance down the hall. And best of all – this is our gift to our “kids”. Having cared for both my parents and my husband’s parents through long illnesses, we are very relieved that we are well cared-for here and not a burden to the family. Our time with our family is always devoted to enjoying them – not asking them for assistance with chores or projects. Although we are completely independent at this point in time, we recognize that this can change in a heartbeat. We are confident that here at RiverMead we are prepared for whatever the future has in store for us.
Meredeth and Leonard moved to RiverMead 11/1/15 at 80 & 84 respectively. We started looking for a CCRC 10 years prior, knowing it was one of life's most important decisions...what form and quality of care do you want till the end of your life? If you select a CCRC model, then the next question is which one, not where. We walked through 35 from Virginia to Maine, 25 made our short list - we followed these ending up with 10 finalists. When we added 'quality and beauty of the area' we eliminated all but RiverMead. Now that we have seen many friends 'progress' from independent living to, say, memory care and finally death and seen the care each has received along the way, we know we made the right decision.
Rivermead has deceived their staff. While they claim to appreciate their staff and all their efforts during covid 19 they show this claimed appreciation by attempting to strip away their rights and mandate something they know is wrong. The administration knows very well the difference between wrong and right but money speaks volumes and that’s the only thing that is heard. It’s sad when this comes before the residents AND their “beloved” staff. While most will comply with this outrageous mandate, due to fear of losing their jobs others will see through this facade. And there will always be “others”.
We were completely smitten by the ambiance of this community on our first visit 2 years ago and we love the Peterborough area. Since we are in mid-seventies it seemed logical to go on the wait list for the future and so we did. However, gradually the unpleasant and hidden aspects of River Mead started to emerge. First, it was 9 months later that we found out the main reason for the very high price, especially for what would normally be a lower cost rural community, was the unusual business model. For the last few years around 50 % of the fees have been essentially going into their health insurance budget which is there if your level of care increases without impacting the monthly fee rate. Most similar places take only ~ 30 %. So, unless you are really feeling in poor health, River Mead may not be the best choice. Residents are informed at the beginning of each year exactly how much they can deduct as medical expenses for tax purposes. We would not be surprised if this loophole is changed at some point in the future severely affecting a CCRC like River Mead. Second, It does not help when River Mead hides it supposed not for profit status in its required 1099 tax filing under a different name… The retirement community at Upland Farm. There you will see an extremely lavish compensation package for the River Mead executives. Other similar places post their 1099s right on their website, like Wake Robin, Vt so there is easy transparency for potential residents, especially the ones who are hit with a sudden health or death crisis and don't have time to do all the necessary due diligence before making a huge financial commitment, or they simply don't have the wherewithal to think of asking certain questions. Third, although River Mead is probably the most expensive country retirement community in New England, they are extremely stingy on spending money for cultural activities like speakers and music. In my one conversation with Bill James the CEO at a villa open house in 2019, when I asked about this allocation, he hesitated to answer for a long time seeming evasive, but finally said several thousand. That could mean just 3 K which is chump change compared to the sum of all their fees and what most CCRCs allocate. The marketing director told me much later that it was mostly up to the residents to organize cultural activities at their expense! At the same time River Mead is unusual in that it does not spend on CARF meeting accepted CCRC standards, Fitchfinancial or Medicare certifications.... like most similar places. Fourth, River Mead does not provide any choice in meal plans. Everyone has to take 30 or so meals a month regardless of whether they use their allocation or not. To be fair such plans exist in many than other similar communities, but there are some that have a lot of flexibility. So, if you simply want a light meal, or have your own special preferences in your unit or visit a restaurant... you are paying double... all for the convenience of the River management with a "one size fits all". If you are in reasonably good health and you want choice and flexibility in your life but not much hassle and fair pricing ... we suggest you might do what we are doing after recently withdrawing from the River Mead wait list. Simply find a nice condo community which has living flexibility that a CCRC like River Mead does not.
Inexpensive construction practices, not terribly well maintained. Limited activity areas.
Came to visit twofriends. The way they were being treated showed the kindness and care this place is noted for.
My mom loves it
