Seaside Aquarium

Description

The Seaside Aquarium is a privately owned aquarium in Seaside, Oregon, United States. It is one of the oldest aquariums on the West Coast.HistoryThe building where the aquarium is located was built initially as a natatorium in the 1920s, an indoor saltwater public bath, with the water pumped from the Pacific Ocean through a pipe still visible today at the tide line, and then heated. It featured balconies where people could watch others swim in the pool below. A decade later, the Great Depression broke its economic feasibility. The building later served as a salmon rearing facility, and then a place to watch wrestling matches. The aquarium was founded in 1937, making it one of the oldest in the United States. It uses the same pipe that was installed in the 1920s to fill the aquarium tanks.FeaturesThe Seaside Aquarium reports 100 species of marine life including 20-"arm" sea stars, crabs, wolf eels, moray eels, and octopuses. The Seaside Aquarium established the first program to breed harbor seals in captivity and allows visitors the chance to feed its seals.

We went on a weekend in mid October. It was pleasantly uncrowded compared to the aquariums I’m used to Tacoma Point Defiance and Seattle. I loved how interactive it was. From feeding the seals, to touching the sea critters. For its size, I felt like there was so much to look at and do. I can’t wait to be back.
Small and awesome little aquarium! My daughter has been asking to see an octopus and they have 2 fairly large ones! We also saw lots of fish, crab, snails and shark. My daughter also loved the two areas where you can reach in and touch snails, sea cucumber, starfish and sea anemone! Don't forget to feed the seals! So much fun!
Great place for the family! Fed the seals and saw all there was to see! They had it all. Right of the board walk. Easy to access. Didn’t cost much. It was extra to feed the seals though but worth it. Tons of tanks with all kinds of sea life. Even got to touch the octopus. Even though your not supposed to. Honestly the signs that said no was tiny and didn’t have my glasses on! Should make those with big litters not fine print! Lol.
What a fun place to visit! This is part of Seaside, Oregon history. The exhibits are well laid out with a lot of information for young and old. The sea lion exhibit is remarkable. I highly recommend buying some food to feed them. They will put on a show of their own creation that will amuse and delight you. I am very fond of octopuses and they have 3 on display. When you visit Seaside, be sure to stop in for a visit, you won't be sorry you did.
Fun little aquarium, helpful staff. Love feeding the seals! Price was $9 for adults, kids under 6 were free. Seal food was $2. Well worth it!
This little aquarium is full of local sea life and very educational and interesting! The best part has to be the seals! You can feed them and you're right up close!! Great place to bring the family and right on the beach. I'll definitely be coming back with my family!
Great smaller aquarium where you can feed seals. Cute little table to draw/trace over on. Couple of tanks where you can put your hands in. Huge cool octopus and many other fish!
Such a great location on the Prom as they call the Boardwalk in Seaside. Loved the educational exhibits....especially the one where children could touch different species that could be found in tide water. I rated it a 4 only because the building is in need of refurbishing....strange community hadn't come together to make it happen. Staff was terrific.
The building isn't impressive but it was a lot more fun than some of the big, expensive aquariums I've been to. The kids loved feeding the seals and the hands on experiences. We had a great time. The price is great, and even the gift shop wasn't horribly overpriced. FYI there is no public restroom, you'll need to go down the beach about 2 blocks to one. Accessiblity: aquarium itself is wheelchair accessible, but the gift shop portion is not. It is up about 4 steps. And the restroom down the beach is not wheelchair accessible, so I suggest finding a restroom before coming.
Go feed the seals; I think this place is important. It is a bit dated, but nothing a paint job and a grant from the state couldn't fix. The displays and the information provided are great for getting some insight to the local biology. Take your kids, take yourself, and learn something while your here:
