Shelby Park

Description

Shelby Park is a large urban park located approximately three miles (five km) east of downtown Nashville, Tennessee in East Nashville, along the Cumberland River. The park includes playgrounds, a dog park, baseball fields, two golf courses, and a community center. The park is located between the Lockeland Springs, Shelby Hills, and Rolling Acres neighborhoods. Until the 2011 opening of E. S. Rose Park, the Belmont Bruins baseball team played a portion of its home games at the park. The Nashville Park Commission acquired the initial land for the park in 1909, purchasing 151acre that had been previously used for an amusement park. Shelby Park officially opened on July 4, 1912. Today the park includes over 361acre of land.In 2011 Nashville purchased the adjoining historic Cornelia Fort Airpark (named for Cornelia Fort) which had been the destination for singer Patsy Cline when she was killed in a plane crash on March 5, 1963. The combined Shelby Park/Shelby Bottoms/Cornelia Fort Airpark has more than 1,000 acres of greenspace. On Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, Shelby Park's 100th Birthday was celebrated with a Birthday Bash hosted by the Friends of Shelby Park & Bottoms.Shelby Park Master Plan and RenovationsIn 2009, Metro Parks, in consultation with EOA Architects and Hawkins Partners Landscape Architects, developed a master plan for Shelby Park. Projects completed through summer 2015 added a special events field, new parking with pervious paving, improvements to a stream, and off street trails for bikers, runners and walkers linked to the adjacent neighborhoods. Metro Arts installed Reflection, a 12-foot-tall mockingbird of stainless steel atop a granite plinth by artist Lawrence Argent, in a new plaza near the event field.

I was visiting Nashville from out of town and I brought my dog to Shelby park to get some exercise. We both loved this dog park so much!! It is a really large, fenced in area with lots of trees and grass for dogs and benches for people to sit. All the people and dogs were so friendly! There were a good amount of dogs there each time I went. Playground: The dog park is located right next to a playground near the local elementary school.
It is a great park with lots of life to see and a small lake with papa/ mama ducks with their babies and many other birds like the heron which I posted here as well.
Located in East Nashville a beautiful spacious park with long walking trails, baseball fields, tennis courts, pavilions, ponds, dog park, settings and kids play areas.
Very nice park for walking, or just relaxing.
Go at your own risk! Our car window got smashed to pieces in the parking lot next to the nature center in broad daylight. The car next to us got broken into too. We had only walked for less than an hour on the greenway & returned to glass everywhere. We did not have anything sitting out in our car, no bags, no valuables, or anything enticing at all - and yet we still got broken into. There were MANY people on the trails, runners, people with dogs, walkers with kids, bikers etc on a beautiful day.. and yet this still happened. Police were called but none nearby to dispatch. There are no cameras here, and another review stated they get an average of 4 break ins a week here. Take that as you will & be safe!
Nice area has something for everyone. Nice trails to go walking or running if that's what you're into. Has a park to bring kids to there is also ducks to feed.
The bottoms are great for exercising in nature. The nature center is a particular shining star if you have kids. The whole park is big and has many areas of use. Playground: There is one. Picnic area: There are many.
Clean and very beautiful park!
Lovely park with trails, playground, a lake, baseball field, lots of green grass for picnic, ample room for social distancing.
this park is the love of my life. Beautiful green space, dog park, baseball fields, bike paths and ponds. There’s a lot of terrain but if you want a flat, easy bike ride take the music city bike trail. Park seems to be clean, safe etc I have never had any problems. There is a beginners running group in the summer that meets on Mondays and Wednesdays and Saturdays- East Nasty Running Club. Maybe my favorite part is the Lawrence Argent melty, chromey birdie-what a delight.
