Our experience with South River Healthcare Center has been wonderful! My father in law spent several months there at the end of his life after several awful experiences with local nursing homes. The girls who cared for him, Sandra, Sharica, Yolanda, LA, Vana, Marylou, Maryanne and Vivian were all caring and wonderful. The day he passed they offered great comfort and concern Highly recommend this great facility!
STILL HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DEPOSIT THE CHECK, 6 MONTHS LATER! Never bring anyone here!!!!!!!! When my father died they cut my late fathers refund out to my fathers “estate”. He has a TRUST, not an estate, and that’s is who they took the money from, his TRUST. They say it’s their “policy” and haven’t even reached out to solve the problem. I call constantly and it’s one excuse after another, now it seems billing is out for the MONTH. I have to create an estate, get a Letter of Administration from the courts that takes approx 16 weeks. 4 MONTHS! I bet they wouldn’t have waited 4 months to get their money from me!!! They were awful with my father! He wasted away in there! Please don’t make the same mistake! Knowing what I’m already going thru and they COULD CARE LESS! I’d give them 0 stars if I could! Aside from the receptionist, they are all useless.
I really love the professionalism from the person that answers the phone. She's helpful, upbeat, and very kind. South River decorates for all holidays, the rooms are larger and it doesn't smell there. The PT department is outstanding. My brother is 61 and hasn't complained. The only problem I've had is reaching social workers or getting calls returned. They all excepted him, even though he's challenging at times. Thank You South River!!!
The only nice thing I have to say about this facility is that the staff behind the front desk is lovely. My mother was transferred here after a serious fracture and was not weight bearing and progressed to be able to put a slight weight on her toes. Per her reports, PT consisted of hand weight and an arm bike exercise. No education on trying to get upstairs, which would be necessary for her to be at home. She was only able to stay 2 weeks and was unsafely discharged home. Her insurance states that they would no longer cover her stay as the facility provided documentation that she was able to transfer with standby assist and hop 5 feet with standby assist. My mother was not in great shape before the fall and could not even hop 5 feet then and she MOST CERTAINLY cannot now. This documentation was highly inaccurate and I question the motives behind it. After appealing this decision and losing the appeal, I was told that their doctor would call the insurance company to advocate her staying there, but I have no confirmation that this even happened. Everything was pushed to a Friday afternoon and now no one can help on a Saturday. She does not have 24 hour care and there will not always be someone home and her living area is down stairs. The doors are narrow and not wheelchair accessible. If there were to be a fire, she could not get out safely. I was told that transport would be arranged for the next day for discharge she is unable to get up the stairs into my home and that I would receive an update. I received no update and got no return call that day. Upon calling back on the day of discharge I was told that the facility was unable to set up transport. I had to make multiple calls just to even get this answer. I was told the supervisor Eunice would call me and she never did. So with no other choice, I transported her via car and was unable to get her up the stairs….as expected. We had to call 911 to have her carried into the home. I also had to call 911 later in the day as she fell when trying to get to the toilet. Also note, the facility informed me that they would order a bedside commode and this has not yet arrived. Perhaps if this was set up before the patient was sent home, she would not have suffered another fall. The discharge was unsafe and the discharge planning and communication was terrible. And now just to be petty, I will share that dinner on Thanksgiving was an egg salad sandwich and pickled beets served in a styrofoam container. Are you kidding me? I am a medical professional myself and am often asked for recommendations for facilities. I most certainly will advise anyone to steer clear of this place. I chose it because it was close to home, and I definitely regret my choice!
I came to visit a special woman who I used to caregiver for. She recently hurt her hip again and is now at the rehabilitation at South River. While I visited her they made her wear a diaper so they didn’t have to take her to the bathroom. She is 100% capable of going to the bathroom they were just using every excuse in the book no to take her to the bathroom. Long story short there is another patient who was in the room and needed the medicine. I am a CNA in training I do caregiving right now so I wasn’t new to a whole lot, but when I see there was someone in need of their meds I made it known to the nurse in charge she ignored me twice. The third time I wasn’t so nice it was over 1hour and 30mins when her meds needed to be taken. The nurse told me to not worry about her and to worry about who I came to see. I then told her that she was being rude and I went off on her and told her she is not treating these residents right at all. The nurse then threatened to call the cops on me and I told her I wanted her to so I can tell them how you are neglecting all these residents. I highly advise you to not bring anybody you love here!
Very bad place!!! My aunt was sent here from the hospital two days ago. Before her coming here I stressed the fact that I would agree for her to come here as long as I did not have an issue with her leaving the facility to come home after I was able to bring her to my home to provide care for her with the help of services coming out to provide assistance. After speaking with the social worker and Dr at this facility they will not discharge her to me? They Say that if she leaves it will be considered against medical advice and they Will not give me her medication!!! How is this even ethical?? It is her medication that is prescribed to her from her doctor?? Her leaving there to come here is not putting her health in any risk. She is going to have the same services that she has there? When she was in the hospital they they were not against her coming home if that was her decision. They said they could set up in home health care and and she could get help at home. Letting a patient leave without their medication to me is far more dangerous!! Every time I call Now they are avoiding my phone calls and not returning any of my calls and are not communicating with me whatsoever!!! It looks like I am gonna have to seek legal counsel . I've always heard terrible things about this place and and the things I heard are definitely confirmed within the 1st 48 hours that I've had to experience with them. I can see clearly why they only have a 2 star rating.
Update: My Dad has been moved back to South River after a terrible stay somewhere else and he seems to be receiving better care this time. The only person who is of any help is the lady who sits at the front desk. The staff doesn't care about the residents and Phyllis who is the director will lie straight to your face about your family members care. My Father has missed several appointments he needed to go to because they failed to get him on transport. My Father has had several strokes, and almost passed away from Covid. They also held his stimulus check as if it belonged to them and we had to jump through hoops to make sure it went to him. They only allow him a certain amount of his own money per month and there's never anyone there to give it to him. They care much more about the dollar than they do their residents. I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau.
I’m Just a regular guy leaving a comment. Not associated with the facility and not trying to dog them either. My Mom was admitted about 2 weeks ago for long term care. She had a challenge adjusting the first two nights but the nurses and staff worked with her. I asked for a family meeting with Nursing, admission, the business office and admissions director. It was scheduled a day later and very productive. Everyone seem very helpful; especially the Nurse Supervisor, Caroline, Admissions Director, Krystal and Social Worker Cindy. The place in kinda old but clean. It’s doesn’t smell like a facility. I see the complaints here but I didn’t let that deter me. For every bad story I’m sure there’s 10 that are ok, but satisfied customers rarely leave comments-so the reviews are skewed. Just remember, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease”. Stay involved in your love one’s care-and don’t be a jerk to the staff and everything will work out well.
The only reason this place gets one star is because it is relatively clean and the staff is nice. However, my father in law is a current resident there and is not pleased with his stay. I’ve pressed the button to call a nurse and waited ten minutes for someone to arrive. They let him sit in his own feces and refuse to bring him a bed pan when he needs one. I don’t know if this place is understaffed or the staff here is just collecting a paycheck, but I do NOT recommend this place for your loved one. I will be reporting them to the Health Department.
I give this place zero stars. Worst facility I have ever seen in my life. Rude staff, to say uncaring would insult uncaring people. We have someone working with us at home now who described this facility as a place “I wouldn’t send a dead dog to.” Hospital PT staff we’re in at present unanimously told us not to go there. Be warned
