SMJCA owns and is responsible for two Jewish cemeteries in the Portland area with the intent of revitalizing and establishing an endowment fund.
Our cemeteries are the history of Jewish life in Southern Maine. They tie us to those who came before us. Family, friends and familiar names abound while strolling through these special places. Sadly, the condition of Mount Sinai cemetery in Portland and Smith Street cemetery in South Portland are endangered. Time has taken its toll on these sacred and historical places.
The Southern Maine Jewish Cemetery Association (SMJCA) was formed in 2016 to address this unfortunate situation.
While each cemetery has been maintained over the years through perpetual care funds and small endowments, the needed repairs to infrastructure and many individual grave sites have been neglected. Some family members have faithfully overseen the upkeep of their loved ones' graves for many years; however, as generations have passed, descendants are often difficult to find. Among those who can be identified, many are unable to fund the repairs.
Our work has come a long way. In the past year, more than 30 headstones that had fallen over because of settling ground and severe weather were stood back up. Tree removal and perimeter clearing have opened many areas that were hidden from view for many years. But we have barely started; there is still so much work to be done.
Planned renovations include more headstone and granite “curbing” repairs, new fencing, signage and renovated entrances. Your tax-deductible contribution will help us to continue making crucial improvements that will enhance the history, beauty and security of these sacred places.
