As an historically black institution (HBCU) founded in 1946 with a glorious history tied to the civil rights struggle dating back to the 1950s, we are proud to note that our graduates are still in the forefront of cutting-edge legal battles. We have been successful in training more than 3,000 lawyers who have made their mark in all areas of the legal profession. They are practitioners in large and small law firms, as well as in public interest law, are members of the judiciary and state legislatures, and are leaders in local, state, and national government. They attribute their success to the legal education they received at the Southern University Law Center.
The mission and tradition of the Southern University Law Center is to provide access and opportunity to a diverse group of students from underrepresented racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to obtain a high quality legal education with special emphasis on the Louisiana civil law. Additionally, our mission is to train a cadre of lawyers equipped with the skills necessary for the practice of law and for positions of leadership in society.
