I loved this place! I went horseback riding on a sweet beautiful Pontifino Pony across a beautiful field and right into the forest. It was spectacular. My guide, Susanne is a trainer and has shown horses for years. The owner, Larry was kind and takes wonderful care of his horses! The location is 3.5 miles from Amicalola State Park off Hwy 52 then 1 mile down Wesley Chapel Road. I recommend this and will go again.
I wanted to check out the campground. I found the address indicated on the Web site. There were two signs AT the entrance, one for Springer Mountain Stables and the other for camping. I drove up the driveway and was greeted by an older lady who said she had heard of "Springer Mountain" but didn't know where it was. She said she didn't know anything about a campground and didn't know what I was talking about. An older gentleman walked by and offered no clarification. Very strange. I am giving this one star because I have to give it something to post this review. Clearly, something is amiss with this campground, if it really is one.
This campground is basically a farmer's back field. The view is stunning. It's quite utilitarian, and if you need a one night stopover either to hit the Appalachian Trailhead or to pass through, this campground will serve that need nicely. The "sites" are just kind of wherever not the kind of place where you have a gravel square 3 feet away from someone else's gravel square. The ground is clear and grassy, there are no trees at all. There is a single well-cleaned bathroom and shower with hot water, located at the end of the horse stables this farm boards horses. Some sites do have an electrical outlet and water spigot. If you need a bunch of activities like a pool or a store or kid's playground, this will not do for you. *TIP: there is no sign for the campground, just for the Springer Mountain Stables. You turn into the stables. Call the owner first and he'll meet you by the stables. Nice guy.
We found Springer Mountain Campground because Amicalola Falls Campground was full for this weekend. Springer Mountain Campground is only 10 minutes from Amicalola Falls. As we drove up on Thursday evening, we saw signs for horseback riding and Springer Mountain stables, but not camping. We passed the place and quickly realized that we missed it. From the other direction, there was a sign for the campground. And the next day, the camp ground sign was on up from both directions. As you drive up, there is a house to the left and stables to the right. Mr. Larry met us near the stable, and asked what kind of site we wanted. We asked for one in the woods near a bathroom, and with a fire pit. Mr. Larry took us to a clearing in a clump of trees, that was surrounded by rolling pastures. It was GORGEOUS! He told us to pitch our tent where ever we wanted and asked if we wanted a picnic table. He came back in about 5 minutes with a picnic table that he set near one of the fire pits. The ground was level and free of stones and rocks and there was a portapotty up a short hill from where we pitched our tent. The only draw backs were that there was no water access except at the stable, which was not walking distance from our site with our children. The other is that there appeared to be one shower for the whole campground. The shower facility was clean and nicer than any other campground I had been in. We thought that this was the most beautiful campground we had ever been in, and it was not at all crowded even though the weekend we went was a prime time.
I went almost 3 years ago and never wrote a review. It was so beautiful and serene. I plan on returning soon.
