St. Johns Twin Cinema

Description

The St. Johns Twin Cinema, formerly known as the Northgate Theater and the St. Johns Theater, is a movie theater located in the St. Johns neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, United States. It was opened in 1913 by the People's Amusement Company.HistoryPlans to build a "modern" theater in what was then the city of St. Johns were announced in 1913 by C. A. Metzger of the People's Amusement Company. The blueprints called for a concrete -story, 50 by 100 ft. building that was estimated to cost $30,000. It featured a 650-seat auditorium. In 1915, the St. Johns City Council voted in favor of an ordinance that would censor a film entitled The House of Bondage and put in place a board of censorship to weed out "lewd" films, spearheaded by socialist mayor A. W. Vincent. Managers of the theatre were supportive of the censorship board and refused to show the film a year before the ordinance was enacted. The theater hosted a town hall event in 1928 about the proposition of a new bridge over the Willamette River in St. Johns. The St. Johns Bridge was completed in 1931.In 1983, the theater was fully renovated by David A. Jones and David H. Evans, who were renovating several theaters around Portland. The main floor auditorium featured 350 seats and the upstairs featured 225 seats. On July 7, 1986 there was a fire in an apartment above the theater after a firecracker was thrown through the window and into a waste basket.

"We are a first run movie house offering two separate auditoriums for viewing. Our main floor is a classic keystone shaped auditorium that seats 275. Our upstairs auditorium was originally the balcony since turned into our second auditorium that seats 100 people. We have Digital and 35mm projection, extra large screens, Dolby surround sound."

I absolutely love this local theater! The prices are great, the employees are friendly, and you can feel the character in the building. Filled with rich history, this theater is a wonderful place to see movies
This was my first visit to the venue. Over all, I give it very good marks. The prices are great, and it's wonderful to see first-run movies in what have long been second-run theaters! The seats were comfortable enough, though a bit "slouchy," and it was great to have a table for popcorn and other concession items. The view of the screen from the upper level was good, though the bottom bit of the picture was slightly obscured from our seats just below the highest tier by the safety bar below. My one big negative is that, although there is a ramp to allow access to the lower tiers of the upper level by people with mobility limitations, I saw no elevator or signage to one. I suspect there may be one but it could be much better marked. All said, I expect to be back!
They have two theaters in one theater. One on the balcony and one in the normal theater area. For the price it was a great experience and the snacks were not too bad either.
Love coming to this little gem. Great prices, snacks, beer, good movies. Why go to a big chain when you can support local businesses like this?
Great local Theater. Great prices, great staff, and the Audio/visuals are good. Great place in St Johns then walk to a local bar.
Ok. This will sound weird because I travel A LOT, but this is truly one of my favorite places anywhere and it makes me so happy it is my backyard! Friendly staff, first-run films, 2 amazing vintage theaters, nom nom pizza, snacks, beers on tap, wine options. What's not to love!! Picture is the small upper theater.
Great neighborhood spot.. Funky twin theater where they separated the balcony from the bottom floor making each it's own room. The pizza was good. Beer and wine are sold. Fun movie experience.
This historical theater gives us the movie going experience we remember as kids. The architecture is art and the food a really good too. I lost my grandfather's silver ring here. If you find it please let me know.
Cute little theater. Watched Death on the Nile, in a smaller room with a full size screen, was sitting near the back but the screen still felt comfortably close for viewing. Good time!
Grew up going to this theater..still nice and affordable.
