Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge

Description

The Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge is a historic gold dredge located in Sumpter, in the U.S. state of Oregon. Gold was discovered in Sumpter in 1862. Three gold dredges were put into service in the Sumpter Valley district between 1912 and 1934.DescriptionA gold dredge works by having large buckets that pull the gold-bearing earth up into its machinery to be processed, keeping the gold and spewing the waste out the back by way of a stacker. Built on a shallow hull, these dredges did not need a lot of water to operate, as they moved their pond of water with them. The internal mechanics were not very sophisticated—they duplicated, on a larger scale, many of the devices used by placer mining throughout the gold rush, such as the gold pan and the sluice box. In essence, the dirt that was dug by the large electrically powered buckets was sifted and sorted, and the remainder was washed over a series of riffles allowing the gold to settle and be trapped. The primary advantages that made the dredge more efficient than other methods were the volume of earth it could process and having its own water supply. The dredge that was built in Sumpter Valley could dig over 20 buckets per minute, consuming more than seven yards of earth each minute. The Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge required a three-man crew to operate the machinery and 17 more workers to complete the crew for maintenance, bookkeeping, surveying, truck driving, managing and a few other roles. The dredge operated 363 days a year; most of the men were given the Fourth of July and Christmas day off from work. One or two men had to stay on board to watch over the machine during the evenings. Dredge workers often reported hearing the ghost of Joe Bush "Haunting" the dredge when the dredge was not operating due to closure or repair.

A must visit place and super cool town. The old Sumpter Valley gold Dredge is Amazing thing to see with your own eyes. It was a floating factory out in the middle of nowhere - they must have railed all the components on site then built it. Amazing feat of human ingenuity. Be sure to walk the short trail to witness how much material this dredge ever moved when it was under operation.
The dredge self guided tour was great as you could move at your own pace. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Panning for gold was fun for all ages. Will definitely recommend!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Handicap accessibility . Guided tours are every hour on the dot. Last tour is normally 2pm. We went on a Sunday at 2 pm. I highly recommend taking a guided tour. There is a path you can take to look at some old mining equipment nearby with benches along the path. Picnic tables are available nearby. They also have a hands on pan for gold activity for the whole family to try, but that is $5 per person. There is a train ride the whole family can take. I took a picture how much and what times. It has a nice little gift shop with informational posters throughout, and you can get a picture in and around some real mining carts in front of the visitor center . Overall, it is a great family activity to do.
Such a cool piece of mining history! Love stopping by the Dredge when visiting the area and showing others how neat it is. When the visitor center is open the staff have always been very friendly and great with answering all questions.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
This is a cool old gold mining dredge that has been restored and now sits in a park area in the historic gold mining town of Sumpter Oregon where the dredge operated for many years. There is also a nature path there for you to explore the dredge ponds, flowers and a board walk to enter and explore the dredge. As you come through the valley you'll see the old dredge piles running along the river as you come to the turn-off for Sumpter. I love it up there. As always leave it better than you found it and enjoy .
An amazing display of Unique mining history. The restoration on this dredge is pretty amazing! You can walk inside and see all the original mechanics. Multiple plaques tell how everything works. There is also a nice trail with lots of mining relics.
A nice quiet place to take a break and step back in time. Easy walking trails with great views. Glad we stopped.

A beautiful long drive to get there, but well worth it. History all around. Lots of quad runners as traffic which I found to be quite humorous. It was unusual but the norm up there. We went to an annual flea market which was actually very fun and quite a few people for the remote area.
What a Wonder this dredge must've been in its day!! You can see where it was used by all the tailings around town . Well taken cared of, located in the middle of town. Nice walking path around the dredge with benches along the way. Couple kiosks with pictures of it in use. Just approximately 30 miles out of Baker City on hwy 7, follow signs. They filmed "Ghost Mine" just out of town on Cracker Creek Crescent Mine.
