If you're into listening to people's car alarms go off all night during the weekend, yellow jacket bees, campsites with very few trees for shade, beautiful sunset view on the North corner of campground, then you will love this place. We were going to stay a whole week but we left after a few days it just became too much. Sometimes it felt like I was parked on the corner in a parking lot in Los Angeles on a Friday. Noteworthy details: Don't forget your earplugs and blinders.
The spaces are extremely small and absolutely no privacy. Sites are literally tent by tent set up right next to each other. Couldn't even use our fire pit because the space is so small. Not only small but at a very steep slope. There were no rangers to be seen. You can hear the cars on the hwy. It was just the worst camping experience of my life. I have literally gone camping every year of my life and this was absolutely the worst experience. I will never camp at Kings Canyon again. We left 1 day early. There were ant holes everywhere. It was just not a good experience.
Overall the campground is well maintained. It does give you beautiful sunset views depending on which campsite you’re staying you might need to walk a bit to get a good view It is pretty close to the village market if you need to grab anything Campground has flushed toilets not super clean though and they don’t have hand soap
Although the location is nice, the campground feels crowded. Places are all skewed and thus not suitable for tent camping, with the exception of a handful check the edges of the campground loops!. Lots of noise, people not following the bear food storing rules, but also nobody to check whether they would follow the rules. Music, generators, big groups and all while sleeping at a 20 degrees slope. Restrooms look like they’re recently renovated and are fine. Two toilets per loop.
The closest showers are at Gina’s Sierra Inn 25-30 minutes towards Fresno. Showers are $10 which on first glance is steep, however, when caked in dirt after days of long hikes, it is the most luxurious experience you’ll ever have. They give you towels, washcloths, and showering toiletries if you want them. There are 4 individual stalls that have hooks and shower caddies which is really next level after using Sunset Campground’s bathroom. Back to reviewing the campground: Being super close to Grant Grove to restock on ice is great. Bathrooms are cleaned daily thank you NPS rangers and staff! but it is crowded and people quickly trash them. Falling asleep looking up at the trees and stars is wonderful. Also, go to Lake Hume!!! It’s BEAUTIFUL.
Worst camping experience ever ever ever. The campers next to us all day and night music, smoky fire of some kind burning wet wood and grass, they were completely drunk by 8am and obnoxious all day long. Kids in our spot, ranger had plenty to say to us about our truck overhanging the spot but nothing about the amount of trash the neighbors left everywhere. We left to hike the trees and see Kings canyon which was closed. Hume Lake is a Christian camp and more of a private place for their guests so that's not a great place to escape but the lake was cool where the public area was. Road to Sequoia just opened
Sunset Campground is basically a party central. The park rangers only go once or twice during the day but they do not go at night. Many people don't respect the 10 pm quiet time. People would have LOUD music until 1:30 a.m.! And chatting and YELLING until the same time, like if it was mid day. So if you are looking for peace and quiet and connect with nature this campground is not for you. It's ridiculous how these stupid inconsiderate people ruin it for most of us. We were there for 1 week and not 1 night were we able to get a good night sleep.
Beautiful. Bare bones camping though. There is running water and flushing toilets. But, no showers anywhere, no bathroom cleaning, no soap, no fire pit cleaning, no campsite cleaning. So, bring soap, a rake for all the debris left from previous group, small bucket and shovel to clean out fire pit as well. Not sure if Covid was a good reason to get rid of showers??But hopefully they will bring them back. It's a dirty place. Sequoia is absolutely beautiful. The visitors center, restaurant, and market have wonderful people working. I could see they put up with a lot, so be kind. Market has basics, but gets cleaned out fast. If you see a Frappuccino you like, buy it. Someone might buy all of them 10 min. later. Restaurant has burgers, breakfast, sandwiches from $9-$18. They get busy so plan on waiting. Drinks served with ice. There is a lodge there, and it seemed like they had vacancy most the time. We had zero cell service. And wifi is $20 per day. I think it was cheaper to use for a week, but yikes. I guess in a way it's a blessing. If you have read this far I have a cool tip. Visit Hume lake. They have fishing, natural rock slide, and a walk path all the way around. It felt like we were in a movie set, with the Christian camp buzzing with kids having fun, to the icecream shop/ boat rental/ market. Absolutely beautiful small lake with a wholesome atmosphere.
