Sunset Bay State Park

Description

Sunset Bay State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Oregon. Administered by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, it is about 0.4mi south of Cape Arago Lighthouse and 2.5mi outside the town of Charleston on Coos Bay. The park offers a crescent shaped beach, tide pools, hiking trails and a year-round campground. The park is one of three along the Cape Arago Highway, which runs along the Pacific Ocean west of U.S. Route 101. Sunset Bay State Park is about 1mi north of Shore Acres State Park and about 2mi north of Cape Arago State Park. A hiking trail links Sunset Bay to Shore Acres.Land for the park was acquired in stages through 1984. Coos County donated the original tract to the state in 1948. In 1954, Ralph Barker donated a parcel with a water supply. The Bureau of Land Management later added tracts through a grant to the state, which also bought, exchanged, or otherwise acquired land from private owners. The combined size of the parcels is about 405acre.

Beautiful clean spacious park great for our last mini reunion. Beach was amazingly clean and the tide pools were so cool albeit a bit slippery and get ready to sacrifice your shoes to the mud! Campground showers were cold pretty quick but park was at full capacity so can't get too cranky. Thanks for what you do rangers
Nice place. Great tree cover and foliage around the campground. Rangers, hosts and volunteers were all great. I wish firewood could be purchased through a wider range of hours. We could only get it 5-7pm. Verizon didn't reach anywhere but loop A for us. Nice little walk to the beach area, which of course has a nice beach and sunset, where seals can be seen at times. Restrooms: Some have showers, others don't. Dog-friendliness: We don't have a dog, but many did.
This place is beautiful! Not alot of people and no wind to blow you down. Easy access and big bathrooms. Love it here. Coming back. Restrooms: Bathrooms were clean and big. Changing rooms with privacy. Easy for the handicapped. Dog-friendliness: Seen a lot of free roaming dogs. Picnic area: Lots of shaded picnic areas with tables. Nice place to come to.
Very nice beach in a half moon bay, with rocks for tide pooling on both sides. Also has a very nice campground and picnic area around the corner.
Beautiful sunset views as per it's name with an open view of the West. Adequate parking and Fun beach to play on for hours within walking distance of Sunset Park campsite for RVs and tents!!! Gave it a 4 since the water spickets to wash sand off of feet are not in use. But there bathrooms! Beautiful experience
Tidal flat or ideal kayak put-in spot if leave the bay you’re seriously brave. Also an exemplary crepuscular ray region on most mornings Restrooms: Multiple Dog-friendliness: Yes
Very nice beach sheltered from the wind and the bay was very calm water, also being protected from the wind and waves. Excellent place to enjoy the beach and a very easy kayak launch for those wishing to paddle the bay or venture out into the ocean know the surf forecast. Restrooms were pretty decent and there were ample shaded picnic spaces just off the beach. Driving on the beach is allowed for kayak or boat launch. Day use only, I've had State Parks employees impatiently waiting for me when returning to the vehicle at dusk.
This was an amazing park to visit. The bathrooms were extensive and included showers though I am not sure if they still are functional and ample parking. The beach itself was amazing, as it had a crescent shaped rock surrounding that kept the waves gentle. Our kids built a stick army that most likely is still standing against those weak sauce waves. But as a family place to visit, it is nice to have such a protected area to visit. The woods surrounding the park are beautiful and there are a lot of camping spots adjacent to it. We plan on going back to camp there some time as the beach itself was fantastic! Restrooms: Flush toilets and sinks with soap are a much appreciated break from pit toilets and discreet trips to heavily wooded areas. There are also benches in case you need to rest after using the facilities. No judgement. There were shower areas, but I am not sure if they are still functional. Dog-friendliness: Dogs are allowed but must be on leashes. It is not a very big beach area so it is probably for the best, regardless of what lies my dog might tell you.
Nice campground with sites of a typical size for OR state campgrounds; which is 2 to 3 times the size of private camp sites. Many of the picnic tables are new in January of 2023. From here you can walk to the Northern side of Sunset Bay and also start the trail to Cape Arago, a gorgeous day hike along the bluffs overlooking the ocean.
Great hiking locations and near the viewpoint for Cape Arago Lighthouse a definite must-see!. Decent and well-maintained campsites and stunning views over the ocean as well as plenty of beach access! It is definitely one of the lesser known gems of the PNW!
