Shore Acres State Park

Description

Shore Acres State Park is a state park 13mi south of Coos Bay in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is one of three state parks along the Cape Arago Highway, which runs along the Pacific Ocean west of U.S. Route 101. Sunset Bay State Park is about 1mi north of Shore Acres, and Cape Arago State Park is about a mile south. The park features 5acre of formal gardens including a rose-testing plot and Japanese lily pond, as well as ocean views and beach access. In the cooler months, visitors can watch storms and migrating whales from the park's sandstone cliffs. Another seasonal attraction is the Shore Acres Holiday Lights, lasting from Thanksgiving to New Year's Eve, when the gardens are decorated with lights and illuminated sculptures.Shore Acres was originally an estate owned by Louis J. Simpson, a Coos County timber baron and son of shipping magnate Asa Meade Simpson. After fire and financial losses devastated his estate holdings, Simpson sold the land to the State of Oregon for use as a park in 1942. The state, which acquired park additions from other owners between 1956 and 1980, began restoring the garden in 1970.

In 1907 Louis Simpson began building his first mansion on the bluff as a Christmas present for his wife Cassie. In 1927, six years after Cassie Simpson died, Louis and his second wife gave the Cape Arago portion of the estate to the state of Oregon. In 1942 the Simpsons sold the remainder of the estate to Oregon for the development of a public park. The rock formations in the bluff is truly unique. Shore Acres garden is worked on by volunteers, what a gift! We visited at just the right time, where we can see the light green shade of new grass and new leaves, and the Rhododendrons and Azaleas are in full bloom. There are many paths to explore, the longest one goes to Sunset Beach. It was lovely to sit in the garden. In the UK, there would be a cafeteria where we can enjoy tea and elevenses. When I first discovered Shore Acres on Google, I had no idea we'd be able to spend such a lovely time walking around and exploring. This is going on our must visit list for next time. Restrooms: Extremely clean Dog-friendliness: The signs and brochures says in capital letters: "NO DOGS OR OTHER ANIMALS ALLOWED OUTSIDE VEHICLES".
Wow, such an amazingly beautiful park ! Stunning views of the rock formations. Great trails to view ocean. The botanical garden is wonderful to wander and take in all the plant life. The Japanese garden area is so serene.
Beautiful and well kept. We just spent some time walking around and did not use any facilities. It was a long drive in. It's a "been there done that" sort of place but nice to visit once.
I love shore acres during Christmas time you have the beautiful lights. There are beautiful trails to hike. There is an old WWll radio station up on one of the trails.
Beautiful view. The botanical gatden is awesome. The flowers were in bloom the first time we went. Took my brother and his family the second time and my son and his family the third time. Can never get tired of the place. If you hike down the beach it is worth it. Oh by the way, buy the taffy... it is the best I've had here in the mainland. Hawaii is still number one for me. Restrooms: Clean restroom.
Had a great time with my sister, make sure to go outside of the gates, wonderful places to Restrooms: Had restrooms, not pet friendly in the gardens,
Such a beautiful experience to go to the flower gardens and then down to the tide pools. It's just such an amazing experience. Restrooms: Restrooms are clean and well maintained. Picnic area: I'm sure you could have a picnic from the lookout. Be sure and follow the guidelines at the payment kiosk.
When you’re in the Coos Bay Area this park is not to be missed! This was our 2nd visit here.
Great place to watch the waves in winter! Summer time check out the local tide pools and the gardens! The gardens are really cool Dog-friendliness: must be on leash but pets are welcome
Shore Acres is an Oregon state park treasure. It’s a must see if you’re in the Coos Bay Area especially for gardeners or flower lovers. The best time to visit is in the late spring or summer when flowers are in bloom. It’s also worth a visit around Christmas to see the lights. There is a lot of history to the grounds and you can learn from the sign posts or the staff giving presentations. The photos of the grounds and plants speak for themselves. Outside of the gardens there is a viewing platform and a great view of the ocean.
