The need for a high-quality public relations education presents a growing challenge in today’s complex world. The practice of public relations therefore must be grounded in formal education and training, along with devoted support by the teachers, practitioners, professional associations, institutions and organizations who possess a stake in the learning outcomes of public relations graduates. The Public Relations program at SUNY Plattsburgh therefore accepts this challenge along with the concomitant opportunities to nurture students’ talents, abilities and skills in public relations by means of a comprehensive academic program emphasizing the theory behind public relations, the original principles of public relations, public relations research, writing and production, supervised experiences, ethics, and public relations planning, management and professional practice – conceived, designed and delivered in a manner that visibly demonstrates, facilitates and reinforces the close relationship between public relations education and public relations practice.
The purpose of the Public Relations program at SUNY Plattsburgh is to continually offer a valuable program in public relations education that fulfills the specific professional, institutional, and departmental objectives of students studying public relations at SUNY Plattsburgh or contemplating public relations as a field of study. To accomplish this goal, the Public Relations program will (1) provide an intellectually challenging and socially significant course of study characterized by a thoughtful, well-rounded curriculum that prepares students for a career in public relations; (2) groom students to enter public relations practice in virtually every kind of organization and help students to gain a clear idea of ways their education prepares them to enter the public relations field and grow professionally; and (3) foster students’ ethical leadership traits and commitment to civic responsibility and the public interest as they take their place in careers in business, government and the non-profit sector by providing them with critical insights into ways their work helps organizations to build and maintain engaging, trustworthy, and mutually beneficial relationships with a wide range of publics.
