I have waited 2 yrs to say this. Because I didn't want people to think it was because I lost a very precious person. If you are thinking about using them please read the reviews. The staff is very cold hearted an unconcerned very unprofessional for what the family wants. The grounds are poorly taken care of. But if this is where u want your loved one buried. Use another funeral home to provide the service. I would have NEVER used them, except his other family members where there. They are a TOTAL disgrace to the funeral service. I wish I could tell u everything I went through with these people. But there isn't enough room to tell u in detail how BAD it really was as his wife. DON'T USE THEIR SERVICE!!!
I am in the process of moving my father out of this place, he passed less than a year ago. Due to the treatment my family received and the lack of respect for all of us including my father, my mother refuses to rest here. There are broken headstones tossed and piled about on the ground. Very disturbing and disrespectful. I feel like this place is taking advantage of our Veterans.
Visited here to see a friend's family member's grave and was appalled at the condition of the site. Almost every single grave was overgrown, the grave markers were covered in weeds, and most had been mowed over on the regular. A few even had tire tracks across the headstones. Massively disrespectful to those buried here. Left extremely upset that these people weren't cared for.
Mom is buried there they where quick to take money but have not been quick to take care of her site. vase was run over by one of their machines called 2 weeks ago was told they would take care of it went today and vase was still crushed and there where tracks across her headstone from where they ran it over
When my grandpa passed aver a decade ago this place was amazing. So much so that two of my uncles were also buried here. They really cared about maintenance and getting markers updated. So imagine our disappointment when my grandma passed early this year and we found how awful it has become...there is an answering service that almost never returns calls and my grandma 's marker hasn't been updated PLUS what was on the joint headstone space with my grandpa had fallen off and was half buried in the dirt. We have been trying to contact someone and no one returns calls, no one is there when we have gone by either. It is such a shame how poorly this once great resting place has become. Our veterans and their families deserve better.
We visited to pay our respects to a family member. After reading some of the reviews, we braced ourselves for what we may find, but we were pleasantly surprised to find a well maintained cemetery. Kudos and thank you to Don Ballard and his wife who have done a good job maintaining the area despite not drawing a salary for their services!
This cemetery is extremely misleading. Our experience has been similar to the other reviews on here--except they took advantage of MY family. Plain and simple. Additionally, over the years, the property has not been well-tended to. It looks junky. Lastly, the new gazebo/money-making scheme/call-it- what-you-will ordeal ... where to begin? If you or your family want a traditional grave-side service, Swan Lake Cemetery is not for you. They force you to do a gazebo ceremony, whatever that is. Even if a contract was organized prior to these new owners. No exceptions, very odd and a bit sketchy. Their excuses have ranged from, "this is what the real veteran cemeteries do and we are trying to be more like them" to "the clay levels are bad and we are eliminating grave-side ceremonies for the safety of the families." If you are looking to be buried, or are looking to bury, in the outer KC area, by all means, look elsewhere! You'll likely be treated better and not taken advantage of as badly at least--we all know how funerals are . Good luck!
When my brother, a Navy veteran, passed away about a year ago, his widow contacted Swan Lake Memorial Gardens and spoke with Don Ballard. Though my brother's family intended to have him cremated and, at the time, had not yet determined what they wanted to do with his ashes, Don offered to handle all the necessary arrangements, charge only the nominal fee for the cremation process, and then present the cremains to his family. There was no pressure whatsoever to use any more services from Swan Lake or purchase anything, only that it was available to the family if they were needed. I know my late brother's family, like I do, would sincerely recommend Swan Lake Memorial Gardens for your funeral needs.
This place is a disgrace I pray people read reviews. It has been a ongoing issue with how the grounds have been kept. Headstones sinking, broken, destroyed. Weeds have taken over. It's like no one takes care of it anymore. And what a disgrace to our veterans.
My father in law passed away three years ago. My mother and father in law thought they had purchased plots with vaults and his headstone. Upon his passing we find out that they did not purchase vaults and had to buy one. They gave us many excuses and made no apologies. It took almost 2 years to get his headstone placed. Excuse after excuse after excuse. After dozens of phone calls and broken promises.... I had to go out there in order to get to the bottom of the problem. After several trips and more excuses..... I had to threaten to get behind Virginia's desk and take care of it myself before things were finally resolved at the tune of another $1200. Now that he has a headstone..... it is crooked. One side is so sunken that the dirt covers it up. The grounds are horrible! Completely covered in weeds! No attempts have been made to get the grounds under control. When I call about the weeds and the mud..... I am told that someone is scheduled to come out and put down weed killer but no attempts will be made to improve the grass........ and it would be up to me to care for his grave site. This place is total joke! If I could..... I would relocate my father in law to a different more respectable cemetery. Unfortunately for us..... my mother in law is to be buried there, too. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE!!
