We stayed at site number 53 on September 6. Wouldn't recommend this section as the sites are very close together. Neighbors actually pitched their tent on our campsite. Bathrooms were clean enough; however the showers in our section were not working. There were quite a few mosquitoes and plenty of poison oak so bring bug spray and keep an eye on where you walk. The beach across from the campground was full of trash. Compared to other state parks we've camped at near urban centers this is probably one of the places we've liked the least and we would not stay here again. Our neighbors kept us up with their drugs, alcohol, and loud music until 2:30 am. If you're going to camp here I'd definitely recommend booking a spot closer to the campground host... or just drive further away from LA. Agree with a previous reviewer that this campground is an exercise in expectation.
It's a beautiful canyon and beach. The Sycamore trees in the campground are amazing. The campground is nice but sites are close together and you don't get much privacy. Can be smoky if your neighbors have a fire and the wind blows your way. The bathrooms are rundown. Showers are not inviting. And there's a lot of ground squirrels that will drive your dog nuts.
This camping site is awesome . The beach is across the street and shopping area is approximately 10 minutes away. It gets very cold and the wind blows as soon as the sun goes down. Great hiking trails. Atmosphere is relaxing and peaceful. Restrooms: The restrooms and shower are kept clean. The shower requires money to operate. Dog-friendliness: Dogs are allowed. Picnic area: Campground provides a picnic table and fire pit.
Clean facilities. Easy access to several trails from the camp. Beach is across the freeway with walking access through an under path. Friendly personnel. Plenty of shade. Easy access from the PCH - 1. Only Avira 30 miles north from Santa Monica.
My family has been camping here for generations every summer. This year was the year that made us decide to change the tradition and try Leo Carrillo next year. Sycamore has stagnant water at every campsite which is why we were eaten alive by mosquitos the showers were all broken and the one that was operating had poop inside, they used to clean the bathroom and showers every morning before. They do not maintain the trees the fallen leaves there are so many spiders it’s kinda scary. All in all we made the best of it but came home miserable from all the spider/mosquito bites. It’s a beautiful place that will always hold special memories but if they can’t maintain it people will not enjoy it. RIP sycamore
Great campsite, includes running water, individual bathrooms and even showers. Also there is a trail with a nice short 1 mile hike up to a great ocean view
Love camping here. It is difficult to get to the beach with out running across a busy highway. It is great for hiking mountain trails.
Another great campground along the ocean. We went for a weekend and we had a fantastic time. Our site was 45 and it had shade all day, it’s mostly cover under a tree. other good campsites is 44, 41 and 56. campsites after 41 have a trail to the ocean that leads under the highway and its passable in low tide. be careful going down to the beach. Restrooms by the bridge were cleaned and flushed we love flush toilets. there is a trail in the back that leads to the hillside. you can take your car and park at sycamore cove beach. one more thing, the campsite floods when it rains, make sure to place tent away from the pit and the picnic table.
Campsites are kinda small and close together. Bathrooms were clean. Only negative is no electricity, so be sure to take back up batteries and portable chargers. About a quarter mile walk to the beach. Waves were small, but water was rough, picking up a lot of sand in the waves. But we had a good time. Would go again.
This is difficult to review. It's an exercise in expectations. If you are a California urban dweller looking for a nature experience close to the beach, five stars. If you're looking for solitude, clean bathrooms and affordability more common in Colorado where I come from, forget about it. Campground was filled with friendly folk, many families, but the fireside 'storytelling' went on until well past midnight at many campsites. Tent limits if there are any were not enforced. Campsite next to us ie 2 feet from us had 7 tents and 3 canopies :. However, for this Midwesterner, the 5 minute walk to the Pacific Ocean from the campsite was totally worth it! The beach was remarkably scenic and had awesome sand. Highlight of the stay was seeing multiple pods of dolphins swim by all day!! By the way, this campground books out well in advance, but we scored a site day of by checking first off in the morning. If you have flexibility, do check for new inventory to post.
