I am grateful for my experience here. Firstly I had to reschedule my appointment and they made it so easy and convenient. On the day of my appointment I was nervous coming in, but Jaime C and Jaime R at the front desk were so sweet and personable. Dr. Irons saw me and was very positive and a comforting presence that eased my concerns. This business is clean, professional, and very cheery. I’m grateful for how comfortable the staff I mentioned made me feel.
Dr. Stella is the best. He patiently answers all of my questions, my gum graft healed beautifully and he made sure I was comfortable during the procedure. My insurance didn't cover the gum graft but Kiara at the Durham office explained all of my options to me and was super helpful and flexible. It was expensive but I called around to periodontists in the area and don't think I could've had it done any cheaper. 4 stars instead of 5 because my insurance should have covered the consult, but I'm still waiting on a claim to be submitted for that it was 3 months ago.
I went in with a sore on my gum caused by my partial. They were very personable, and appeared to be thorough. They said I needed surgery! That this place would not go away on its on. Well, I had to put the surgery off and guess what? The place is Gone!!! They charged me $400+ dollars and set up a surgery that was going to cost almost $2,000. Communication has been terrible, I call but it’s an act of congress to get someone to call me back. I do not recommend, I do not trust them, and I certainly wouldn’t have them do surgery, Dora
Tldr - I was misinformed along several steps of the process. Given the choice between going back to Tar Heel Periodontics and letting my teeth fall out, I might just let them fall out. My biggest issues were 1 during my consultation, I asked if I would be awake for the procedure that I would have. The doctor said no. I came in the day of my procedure and was very much awake for the entire process. Not the end of the world, but extremely jarring to have this put upon me without warning. My larger issue 2 has been related to insurance. During my consultation, the insurance coordinator told me that payment was due up front and that I would be reimbursed through my dental insurance. I expressed that I was concerned because I didn't know if my insurance covered the procedure that I was having. I was told by the coordinator, verbatim, "they have to" because it's not an elective procedure. I trusted that this was true and agreed to have the procedure since I've known for some time that my gum needed to be fixed up one way or another. After months of Tar Heel Periodontics failing to submit my claim and not communicating with me at all about the complications that they were experiencing, here I am, still with no reimbursement. My advice if you must go to this periodontist - do not let them pressure you into signing up for procedures. Ask them exactly which dental codes will be performed if you do have the procedure, and call your insurance to ask them if those codes are covered. Then call Tar Heel to schedule your procedure. If and when you do have your procedure, immediately request pdf versions of the completed claims forms so that you can submit them to your insurance on your own if needed. One positive thing -- the dental assistant who worked with the doctor during my procedure was very sweet. I can't remember her name but she was very comforting.
Had a fantastic experience at Tar Heel Perio. Dr. Valentine did a wonderful job and he and the whole team were exceptionally helpful. Would highly recommend for anyone seeking periodontal care.
I felt nervous going into my surgery but everyone at Tar Heel Periodontics ensured I was safe and would have a great surgery. During the surgery I was relieved of pain in actuality when I thought I would be in pain the whole time. 10/10 service!
Eileen and Dr. Stella are the best. I was really nervous, but Eileen's kindness & care put me at ease. Thanks, Eileen!
My husband was seen here and had a really unfortunate experience at this clinic with the staff, particularly the insurance specialist! The Dr showed him two videos in order to explain to him what was going on which was semi helpful, but a little impersonal. The front desk staff was helpful and friendly. But the insurance specialist was pushy and rude. My husband didn’t realize this provider was out of network, his dentist referred him to this practice, yes we should of done our homework. She expected him to make a $3,500+ payment in full THAT DAY and MAYBE insurance would reimburse him or he could apply for care credit citing that this was emergent. Meanwhile I was on the other line with him just telling him to leave. FORTUNATELY he didn’t do it and we found a periodontist who is in network lesson learned and is much nicer to deal with and more conservative and practical! We will never be back or deal with this practice again! Update: What Tar Heel was saying was an emergent procedure, indeed is not per a second opinion. My husband canceled his appointment with Tar Heel and the insurance specialist had the audacity to call him hours later and interrogate him! This felt much like a used car salesman and not like healthcare! I’ve never experienced anything like this in my life! Completely different experience at the second opinion office, NONE of this is emergent at all, can be done in stages this is according to TWO additional periodontists! And the insurance specialist from Tar Heel called him an additional TWO times!
I'm really concerned after reading the previous reviews of patients using insurance. I only paid for a consultation and x-rays, but I may be out that money if my situation is similar to others. I have never heard of a provider requiring a patient to pay up front and then filing the claim afterwards. I will call to get further clarity on when the claim has been filed, because it seemingly takes months for people to hear back. I am hoping my claim is filed in a timely manner so that I'll be reimbursed quickly. I can't in good faith pay for further procedures without a better understanding of their processes.
If it weren't for the actual periodontists, I would give this place 1 star instead of 2. I was referred here for a gum graft, and my experience with both Dr. Stella and Dr. Kretchmer was great. They were very attentive and thorough, and I would recommend them both. HOWEVER: it's the horrible office staff that is lending to my 2 star rating. They are extremely disorganized, aren't clear about timelines, insurance claims, credit policies, etc. After a 15 month battle with them not filing my claim, then filing it incorrectly multiples times, I received a $600 payout for an almost $3,000 procedure - for which I was originally quoted an insurance refund of ~$1,800. There are some other reviewers who seem to have had similar situations, but I assumed those were specific scenarios and that my experience would likely be ok. However, I should have known that something was amiss when I went for my initial consultation. While I was waiting to be taken back for my appointment, a man showed up in the lobby asking to speak to the insurance coordinator, as he had been trying to get in touch with the office and no one was answering his calls or returning voicemails for the last 6 months. So , lesson learned, if you're using any kind of insurance, I'd honestly go somewhere else. It's sad that such good doctors have such horrible office staff.
