The history of The Irish Gift Shop!
Patricia (Limerick) and Joe (Dublin) Maher opened the Irish Gift Shop (formerly known as The House of Ireland) in 1984 near the present location of the Columbia Restaurant - St. Augustine. The store measured 10 x 12 feet. Patricia jokes that the store was so small that "when people came in she would have to go out! Within two years the Maher's expanded into a 3,000 square ft building at 139 St. George Street near The Woman's Exchange of St. Augustine - Peña-Peck House. Joe Maher was one of the founding members of the Hibernia Regiment, a group of Historical Reenactment actors that celebrate the 400-year-old Celtic heritage of St. Augustine.
The store flourished for many years and in 2001 the Maher's decided to retire and sold the business to David & Jan Perkins from Dublin Ireland. Grace Reed acquired the business in 2016 and in 2017 moved into the current location.
The Irish Gift Shop is housed in a green Victorian building at 26 Cuna Street and is open 7 days a week! Come see us!
