Tompkins Square Park

Description

Tompkins Square Park is a 10.5acre public park in the Alphabet City portion of East Village, Manhattan, New York City. United States. The square-shaped park, bounded on the north by East 10th Street, on the east by Avenue B, on the south by East 7th Street, and on the west by Avenue A, is abutted by St. Marks Place to the west.History19th centuryTompkins Square Park is located on land near the East River, that originally consisted of salt marsh and open tidal meadows, "Stuyvesant meadows" (map, left), the largest such ecosystem on Mannahatta island, but has since been filled in. The unimproved site, lightly taxed by the city as most agricultural properties were, seemed scarcely worth the expense of improving to its owners, the Stuyvesants, who inherited it from the 17th-century grant awarded to Peter Stuyvesant, and their Pell and Fish relatives. The City aldermen, to raise the tax base of the city, accepted a gift of land in 1829 from Peter Gerard Stuyvesant (1778–1847) with the understanding that it would remain a public space, and compensated other owners with $62,000 in city funds to set aside a residential square; transforming the muddy site took another $22,000 before Tompkins Square was opened in 1834. Surrounded by a cast-iron fence the following year and planted with trees, the square was expected to have a prosperous and genteel future, which was undercut, however, by the Panic of 1837 that brought the city's expansion to a halt.

A chill lesser known park in NYC. Moderately crowded and clean. There were people with their picnic mats - I saw some dogs, people with their guitar and beers. I also saw someone setting up stage for a mini music concert later. Great for a sunny day! Only downside is that there is no subway close - you have to walk for 8-10 minutes to the closest station.
Tompkins Square Park is a relaxing place in the East Village. The park is relatively small in size about 10 acres, but it has plenty to do, including a playground for children, an off-leash dog park, chessboard tables, and green space for picnics and reading. The park has plenty of trees that make for a pleasant afternoon stroll.
My niece was playing in a basketball game. It was great. I loved the art, good idea for playground behind the basketball court for the younger children. Everything looked good Very clean park
Little smelly with trash cans and bags all over. Entrance hard to find on E 10th St side. A lot of construction/scaffolding in certain areas of the park. This park is good for kids; there are a couple of playgrounds, picnic space, basketball courts, two squash courts.
Beautiful park, is not one of the biggest but that makes it special, if you want to relax, take a walk with your dog this is the right place and not to mention that you will have lots of places to eat something all around the park
Where neighbors come to dream of their own lawns, pool, basketball court, baseball fields and children playgrounds...
My favorite park in this big beautiful city. Picnics start around end of May when the grass grows in and it's warm enough. The evolution of this park over the last 5 years has been wild.
Small, cute park. Good seating for people who prefer tables to picnic on. A dog park large enough dedicated just to pet owners.
My puppy Constitution absolutely LOVES the dog park for the little ones! He always has so much fun! I am extremely surprised by how clean the dog park is considering this park can sometimes attract some crazy things lol. But all in all, my puppy absolutely lovessss this park! Thank you, Tompkins for still being around since I first stepped foot in this park almost 20 years ago! ‍ ‍ • Instagram: Aly.mfc • Twitter: Alylivecam
