About

Description

Level 1 trauma center with round-the-clock service? Specialists that draw patients from miles around? State-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities?

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital has a lot in common with human medical centers, but our facility is here to help animal patients: anything from alpacas to zebra finches. As part of the University of Illinois and the state’s only College of Veterinary Medicine, the hospital also plays an important role in educating the veterinarians of tomorrow and expanding knowledge and treatments to improve animal lives.

With more than 80 veterinarians on staff, including more than two dozen specialists as well as interns and residents, the hospital has experts in fields from anesthesia to zoo medicine. There are boarded specialists in both large and small animal internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, radiology, emergency and critical care, dermatology, oncology, theriogenology (animal reproduction), and more.

Each year more than 20,000 animal patients from across Illinois and beyond visit the hospital. Most are referred by their primary care veterinarian for specialty care, but animal owners can also use our services for routine health care, rehabilitation, 24-hour emergency service and intensive care, or for on-farm animal care provided through an ambulatory service.

Do Not Bring Your Pet Here!! They will hold your beloved pet hostage! We drove 1.5 hours to have an invasive procedure done and after 5 hours of waiting for any actual vet to even look at an X-ray I asked to have my dog released back to my care so I could take him to his vet for any surgical procedures that he may need; since it would be to late for an endoscopy to be done to remove the foreign object by now. While sitting in the waiting room it had become apparent that this place is all about money and not the care of your pet. After demanding my dog back they finally had a vet talk with me and during the 5 hours they had him hostage they didn’t even do an X-ray or anything on him.
The doctors and staff could not have been more caring and concerned about about our Shih Tzu Max and us. They understand our fur babies are not just pets but family. I can not thank them enough for the wonderful care Max received.
Knowledgeable, compassionate, and dedicated staff. My hedgehog was treated by the Zoo Med and ICU team over the course of 4 days. Drs Wong and Keller were thorough and thoughtful in their care. All health risks, financial costs, and other related concerns were addressed upfront in a very clear but empathetic manner. Juniper was ultimately diagnosed with a life-limiting condition, but the treatment she received, as well as the follow up consultation with her primary vet, ultimately gave us a few more invaluable weeks together. I cannot recommend this hospital enough for other caretakers that want their pets to be treated as the family members they are.
We had an emergency with our dog. Our vet recommended the we take him to U of I. He had to stay four days for testing and underwent a blood transfusion. The staff were knowledgeable, caring and compassionate. Although he was diagnosed with a terminal disease we have him home with us and for the time he's doing well.
While visiting from out of state, my dog ate a small block of rat poison. I called the local clinic and was referred to this hospital about 40 minutes away. I called them with my pet’s information while driving to their location. When I arrived they took her back and gave her treatment. The staff was very professional and efficient. My dog was fine and I was relieved. The cost of the treatment was very reasonable. From an out of stater’s perspective, this place is outstanding.
Took my dog in because he kept throwing up, I’m a first time dog owner and I know pretty much nothing about any of the procedures or how things go so I asked one of the girls she had purple hair didn’t get her name behind the desk, basically i asked what’s going to go on and how long it’s gonna take. She told me that it’d be about a 30 minute wait and after those 30 mins if you’re still concerned come back up and ask. I go back up after the 30 mins and ask them to call back just to see if everything is okay, they then called but after they gave the answer and I walked away my girlfriend said they were mocking me and rolling their eyes at me. I get it you don’t like your job but my dog is back there and I’m paying you money for this If I ask you a question about my dog I expect a answer or for you to search for the answer and not give me any attitude about it. Thank you.
This place is an amazing facility. The services, prices, and staff are all outstanding and professional. My dog has a future that no other clinic was able to give him. They have specialists that no other clinic has. Their organized and compassionate with your pet during their visit!
I felt like we were throwing money out the window with this place. We took our dog there and after spending $1,000 on tests they could not tell us what was giving him issues. We ended up figuring out on our own that his new batch of medication was giving him problems. Despite our better judgment we took our cat there recently and they wanted to perform $5,000 in tests to figure out what was happening. They were no help and we had only agreed to pay the minimum exam fee for the visit and left. We took our cat to our normal vet the next day and they immediately knew what was the matter with him. U of I Vet Hospital called later and demanded more money from us for things we did not agreed to. I feel like they have scammed us twice and will never go back. I wouldn't trust my animal at this place even if it's my only option.
Money. Money. Money. That's all this place cares about. It doesn't care about your animal or they wouldn't price an xray at 300 bucks a pop. We were so overwhelmed with how much every thing was going to cost upwards of $10,000+ that we felt forced to euthanize. If I had not been so panicked by our emergency I would have looked at other places to go. I feel the horrible guilt of giving my dog a death sentence by bringing them here. They wanted us to pay almost 5,000 up front. The front staff was absolutely ruthless. They said oh we have a credit card you can apply for... with what credit bro?? If you have an actual emergency do not take your beloved animal here. Cause Money Money Money. That's their only goal.
