UPMC Hamot

Description

UPMC Hamot, formerly known as Hamot Medical Center, is a 446-bed hospital and a tertiary-care medical facility located in Erie, Pennsylvania. It is one of the largest employers in the Erie region. The complex features several large buildings, including a heart institute.HistoryHamot was founded as the Hamot Hospital Association on February 7, 1881. The hospital was named after Pierre Simon Vincent Hamot, a successful French businessman who had settled in Erie in the early 19th century and became an active member of the community. Following his death in 1846, his children and grandchildren donated the Hamot Homestead for use as a general hospital. Quickly organized and managed by the first nurse hired by the hospital, Irene Sutleff, the hospital opened its doors to the public on July 1, 1881, and treated its first patient who was admitted on July 10, 1881. The Hamot Homestead facility quickly outgrew its 25 patient capacity, and the first of many expansions was conducted in 1888.In 2009, Kane Community Hospital in Kane, Pennsylvania became a controlled affiliate of the Hamot Health Foundation, and therefore later became affiliated with UPMC through Hamot's integration with UPMC in 2011. UPMC Hamot also has clinical affiliations with Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Elk Regional Health Center, and Warren General Hospital. On January 8, 2011, Hamot opened a five-story, $59 million Hamot Women's Hospital to house its obstetrics and gynecology services. Hamot's marketing campaigns have used a variety of themes, including "...it matters where you go", and "leading the way to better health".Affiliation with UPMCOn August 27, 2010, Hamot Medical Center and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) signed a letter of intent to negotiate a $300 million affiliation deal. On January 10, 2011, Hamot's board of trustees unanimously approved a formal agreement to affiliate and integrate into UPMC as the medical center's tertiary hub for northwestern Pennsylvania. Hamot's affiliation with UPMC official began on February 1, 2011 and the medical center was renamed "UPMC Hamot". In December 2015, UPMC Hamot Women's Hospital was renamed to Magee-Womens Hospital - UPMC Hamot Campus to reflect its alignment with Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.

I would rate this hospital zero stars if that was possible. The continuity of care and treatment planning for patients from day to day and one shift to another is very poor. There are some caring doctors and nurses, but my family’s attempts to advocate and to explain medical history were mostly met with indifference and heartlessness. One staff member who was not even involved in the patient’s care was incredibly cruel to me and my family. There were many inaccuracies entered into the notes for the patient and treatment was inadequate. After several questionable situations, a significant error in surgical scheduling occurred causing a delay in care to which a member of hospital management laughed and minimized the situation saying “well there have been so many ‘snafus’ with her.” It was highly unprofessional behavior and there is no accountability at this facility. I believe that ageism may be a part of the culture impacting treatment. Especially for patients with complex medical conditions involving multiple specialties, I would highly recommend going to a different hospital.
Came with my sister who was in a great deal of pain. There was a total of 8 people in the ER waiting area. We waited 3 hours and watched all 8 people go before us. Then another hour went by and 4 more people came and went. We still sat and waited. She went to the bathroom to puke due to her pain. We had to leave. This isn’t the staffs fault as I’m sure they are understaffed and doing what they can but this facility is constantly making mistakes or not giving proper care. Staff is great and they get my star. Update. Finally got a room and doctors got right down to business. He was fantastic. Dr. Richardson is his name. Unfortunately there’s so much staff just sitting around literally playing with their hair watching tik toks.
Literally is the best hospital I have ever visited. The kindness, empathy and affection that the doctors and nurses in the ICU have treated my mother is incredible, it is worth admiring. Vocation professionals without a doubt. I am extremely happy, confident and satisfied to have my mother there. I feel relax and confident because I know that my mother is in good hands.
Got a couple new knees here in the last 2 years. Dr. Cortina and Kate are the best ! The nurses were very nice and professional when I misbehaved lol. I would like to extend a special thank you to Maribel the night nurse. She went up and beyond the call of duty.
What can I say about UPMC Hamot? Foremost I’ve gotten better care here that at St. Vincent’s. The nurses and aids are great at their job and very accommodating. Sometimes s things get hectic and there’s a bit of a wait. Other times they simple cannot act out of their sphere to meet your needs. Most of the docs are great. Though many-likely due to the narcotic crisis- air on the side of caution. Even when that means the patient suffers a little. Sometimes it’s the condition the patient has that limits meds available. The food is pretty good. Meeting a wide variety of tastes. Sometimes transport from test or procedure takes a little longer than one would like. They are thorough in their work. Just make sure you use your voice and tell them what you need. Do not be afraid to say no either. Now, the pictures of this room are not typical. This is like a suite.
Writing this to help any other families. The MICU is a terrible place, 1/3 of the staff is rude, sadly incompetent, unprofessional, 1/3 are fake compassionate, caring and not genuine as they roll their eyes walking out of the room and 1/3 are amazing, intelligent and what you hope Healthcare should be. Get a patient advocate or do your own research, know your rights as a family. Hospital patient advocate is useless and remember, they work for the hospital, they are not in your side. Gain access to family members myupmc account and review notes and document inaccuracies because there will be many. Be very vocal with your concerns and questions and document responses, sadly you may need it later. Have a thick skin and try to ignore the conversations you overhear and remember why you are there, for your loved one. Healthcare and the new breed of providers are in a very sad state now, inability to think critically and the shortage of nurses leaves you with some that unfortunately stopped their education at graduation. There are few good hospitals anymore, just good people if you are blessed to have them care for your loved one. And no need to respond UPMC to my review, our experience will be detailed to the complaints and grievance dept, joint commission, Medicare and any other organization we see fit. I hope this helps anyone who reads it.
I’m reviewing the neurology unit. If I could give it a ZERO I would. Without telling a long drawn out story of complete incompetence, disorganization, horrible communication and over worked/ severely stressed out nurses, I’ll say DO NOT GER CARE HERE IF TOU HAVE ANOTHER CHOICE. The hospital folks elsewhere were helpful and kind, however.
The way that the staff speaks to people is concerning. The staff at check in is beyond rude. I do understand and respect that they deal with a lot. However not every person that comes in is going to be a problem. Whether you’re the nurse at triage or the staff at check-in, I believe that you should be able to speak to people in a respectful manner. If you can’t then you should look for a different profession.
My wife was a patient in June. A nurse while doing routine care accidentally slipped and hit her in the mouth loosening a tooth which now has to be extracted.they refuse responsibility claiming there is no proof the tooth wasn’t loose before
After being brought in for a head injury not once we're my eyes checked during the 5 hours I was there. And mind you I have had numerous brain surgeries, so that should have been done. I get that the hospital get busy. I was in a hall bed and twice I saw a nurse catch herself as she Almost gave a patient medication that wasn't even ordered for them?
