Mission

The Waisman Center's mission is to advance knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Products

In pursuit of its mission, the Waisman Center incorporates many types of activities in four major areas: research, training, service, and outreach.

Research:

Scientists at the Waisman Center seek answers to many questions about the causes, consequences, and cures of developmental disabilities and neurodegenerative diseases.
Examples include: How does the nervous system develop? How are brain structure and function connected? How do we inherit diseases? How does vision develop? How do we acquire language? What factors influence learning and school success? How do families fare over the life-span when their child has a developmental disability? How can we translate new gene and stem cell discoveries into treatments?

Training:

Training of undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows occurs throughout the Waisman Center. This training prepares the next generation of researchers, teachers, and health care providers in programs related to people with disabilities or neurodegenerative diseases.

Service:

The Waisman Center provides extensive on-site and community-based programs that promote the health, education, well being, and independent living of people with developmental disabilities and their families. Examples include the Center’s 10 specialty clinics and a preschool where children with and without disabilities learn together, community-based early intervention services for young children, and a behavioral support program.

Outreach:

The Waisman Center shares its resources in many ways—through public lectures and seminars; through consultation to physicians, educators, and other professionals; through an internet web site and resource center specializing in topics related to developmental disabilities; and through articles in professional journals, books, and other publications.

The Waisman Center adheres to the University of Wisconsin-Madison social medial guidelines.

Incredible insight into brain health. This team and their systematic approach to TBI is comprehensive, repeatable, and caring. Our family is very grateful to this team and the Waisman Center
That's a good place if you have a little child you can drop them off while you work I work there myself I worked in the childhood center if you have a little kid a little munchkin you can drop them off there until you get off of work that's when my dad and my mom did when I was 3 years old back in the day I was at the weisman center the childhood side
That's is a great research facility in Madison. They work hard to better understand children. The space Could be a little more inviting to children. The American Family children center is very very welcoming and I would love to see this center have more children's features throughout.
Today's visit didn't as planned due to unexpected behavior issues but I did felt comfortable with our sons therapist who is helping him gain access to a talking tablet. This would be a HUGE achievement for my son. It would again open more doors for him. Having a non verbal child is tough when communication isn't clear. We never know if his head hurts or if he is sad. This tablet would change so much. For my son. For us. Thank you Weismann Center for truly caring about the patients and their families. #autismlife
It took three years to get an appointment only to have my symptoms dismissed as a wine headache. The misdiagnosis from Dr. Rice ended up causing me to be in such severe lactic acidosis that it caused nerve damage throughout my body. It's so ironic that a clinic that specializes in treating people with developmental disabilities has been the most discriminatory toward me, an autistic adult who is trying to manage their own care. Speaking of autism diagnoses, they do not diagnose anyone over the age of 26, which contributes to the gender disparities that women and non-binary people face in getting a diagnosis. Going through a private clinic is on average about $2,000.
This place is wonderful and I have so many great things to say about this place!!! They have been a tremendous help with my kids regarding their disabilities and genetic disorders. All of the staff and doctors have been so friendly and very helpful with anything we may have needed. I would highly recommend this place to anyone that needs help regarding any disability or genetic disorder!!!
Great place. All of the staff my child and I have encountered have been professional, nice and accommodating. Parking is pretty easy and labeled. Located in a close spot to other UW buildings.
They helped me back in 1978 when my parents didn't know why my mental functions weren't developing. I do have a slight case of autism, but with their recommendations I got the help I needed in school and now am able to live a normal life.
It is a good place, but the parking isnt. You have to park then you have to go inside and get a parking pass.. it should be that if you have appointments they need to send the parking pass in the mail so you know where you are able to park so you dont get any tickets or your vehicle gets towed.. and so if you are like me and have a baby and must always keep tons of things she needs with me, it is such an invonvience to constantly carry her plus everything she needs and on top of it to have to do it more than once just because it is easier for them.. yeah lets make a pregnant woman who has to carry a baby and all of her babys things carry them more than what is needed..
My mom called to get her genetic testing results fax to another hospital and they were very rude, unfriendly and unhelpful! Lots of "Maybe" "I don't know when" "If we have time". After dealing with UWM who were amazing, this has set back our future appointment.
