Through its programs and services, our mission is to provide access to information that furthers student and faculty research, learning, and instruction.
The Walter W. Stiern Library opened in 1994 and is the largest building on the California State University, Bakersfield campus. The 150,000 square-foot building houses nearly half a million volumes and provides electronic access to more than 30,000 periodical titles via its hundreds of computer terminals. The Library is managed and operated by 27 staff members and faculty librarians. The Library also maintains a branch library at the CSUB Antelope Valley campus in Lancaster. The Dean of Libraries oversees all operations and services.

Statement of goals
1) Be the center for learning on campus;
2) Continually seek new ways to provide access to information, through teaching, service and technology;
3) Be patron driven in services and collection policy;
4) Develop a physical structure and an organizational structure that meets 21st century user needs;
5) Be immersed in the life of the schools and departments;
6) Develop and maintain programmatic partnerships for information literacy instruction;
7) Be a hub that connects the student, the community, and CSUB’s schools;
8) Relentlessly seek ways to provide access and locate funding;
9) Have regular public programs that engage and connect students, faculty, and community;
10) Be the center for the preservation and promotion of regional history.
