A committee of Wheeling, Missouri area volunteers who have organized to create a new Community Center & Museum. Contributions are tax deductible.
We hope that this page can serve to provide current information about progress in fundraising, and later in the construction of the Wheeling Community Center and Museum. It will also provide a channel of feedback for our contributors and anyone with ties to the Wheeling Community. After much study of alternatives including surveying other similar facilities in neighboring communities, considering refurbishing the current shelter house and/or purchase of another facility; it was decided to pursue a new facility to be built in the City Park. Based on current building costs and the expected escalation of those costs during our 2-year Capital Campaign, we set a goal to raise $250,000 for a facility covering a footprint of 100 feet by 50 feet with the best energy efficiency we can obtain. On June 15, 2015, we will assess our success (or failure) and 1) proceed to let bids, 2) adjust our plan to fit funding and then let bids, or 3) admit failure and refund all contributions to our donors. Assuming we are successful, our plan is to break ground at or immediately after the 2015 Wheeling Homecoming in order to dedicate the facility at the 2016 Wheeling Homecoming which is also the date that a time capsule buried in the park in 1966 will be opened.
Our mission is to create a larger, modernized Community Center that incorporates a museum to house and display historical artifacts of area residents, area veterans, Wheeling High School trophies, composite class photos, and other significant items. This facility is intended to replace both the aging Wheeling Shelter House and the Wheeling High School and gymnasium/auditorium which was demolished in the 1990's.
