Westlake/MacArthur Park station

Description

Westlake/MacArthur Park is a heavy-rail subway station in the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system. It is located at Wilshire Boulevard and Alvarado Street, across from the park of the same name in Los Angeles' Westlake District. This station is served by the Red Line and the Purple Line.Westlake/MacArthur Park is one of L.A.'s five original subway stations: when it opened in 1993, it was the western terminus of the Red Line before completion of the Wilshire/Western branch (now called the Purple Line) and North Hollywood branch (still called the Red Line) later that decade. This station has two tile murals designed by Francisco Letelier, entitled El Sol (The Sun) and La Luna (The Moon). The station also has artwork by Therman Statom.Right outside the station, MacArthur Park and a lively street scene of a largely Salvadorean, Guatemalan and Honduran population is in stark contrast to the Manhattan-like metropolitan environment one station to the east. The entrance to the station is only a few steps away from the landmark Langer's Deli, which is famous for its pastrami. Workers from downtown offices often jump on the Red Line or Purple Line in order to have lunch there or send someone to pick up food for take-out. Langer's credits the Red Line's opening with saving their business in the late 1980s, when MacArthur Park's once glittering reputation had decayed to notorious at best. Langer's Deli is featured in one of 13 ceramic mosaic murals located inside the MacArthur Park station. The porcelain murals, by Los Angeles artist Sonia Romero and fabricated by Mosaika Art & Design, were named one of the best public art projects in the United States by the organization Americans for the Arts.

Westlake / MacArthur Park metro station. Red and purple lines can be taken here. The metro system of L.A. is a good option to travel fast, safe and cheap.
Once you get out of the station, there’s a Mercado latino on the street. It’s fun to check around. It gets a lil sketchy at night time. There’s misa gatherings happening at the mcarthur park every Sunday.
Dirty and too many drug addicts and homelessness
Dirtiest park I've ever seen in my life. Nothing against homeless people, I get it, but, the amount of dirty needles, open drug use, panhandlers, and garbage everywhere was just unacceptable. Cops could care less that there's people literally heating up spoons on the streets to do their drugs with. Also, tons of bird feces. It's like they've completely given up on this place.
I'm always through here. I love it, but also I reflect back to the time where I lived here. In 2016 I was homeless living out of a tent. It was rough, but there were numerous outreach ministries that came to the park to help those in need. Vendors in the area for the most part are generous and although it can be a dangerous place at night, police patrols are fairly frequent. There's free events with music in the summer at the Amphitheater and there's always someone selling snacks close by. I also like to sit and view the pond. The downsides just come with the territory, they don't bother me that much.
This station is located in one of the poorest neighborhoods compared to the station before and after it. The entrance has street vendors selling stuff. The station may be safe but because of all the vendors and homeless people, it doesn't appear that safe especially for women.
The park is a nice place to visit even though there are many homeless with tents. There are many shops like Home Depot, Food 4 Leass, Rite Aid, and free-market shopping at the various strip malls. There is fast food like McDonald's, Carl's Jr, Starbucks, Burger King. There are 4 Seven Eleven,. All major banks, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase. There are 2 24 hour Laundry Mats and various ones open during business hours. Access to many Lime, Bird, and Lyft Scooters. You also have the Metro train station and access to the 20,18, and 16 bus lines which operate 24 hours. Its not a bad hub to be in. You also have the Rampart police station. Mostly a Latino urban area with the average rent of about 1300/month, access downtown, and Koreatown within minutes. The downsides are it can be noisy, there is trash everywhere, many homeless, and don't leave your valuables unattended, they tend to get taken if you do so.
After 5pm Caught train from 7th St Metro hoping to go to Hollywood/Highland but accidentally got on purple line. Train stopped at MacArthur Park and were told train was returning to Union Station. Everyone else got off & we followed to catch another train to Hollywood, & that train got sent back to Union Station as well. As we were waiting we could see people running & smoke in the distance coming from the tunnel. We ran up the stairs to get away from the smoke & quickly ran up the escalator to get out of the station. Sure enough LAFD & LAPD turned up to check on the status. As far as I was aware trains had stopped and we were to find our own way to our destination. As tourists we didnt know where to go as we were in an unfamiliar area. Thank goodness for Uber. Although this was a bit inconvenient I still give metro five stars because most of the time they have been reliable, I just wish that there was some type of information on what other transport options there were, especially for tourists or people who dont know the area.
Convenient stop for church service in MacArthur Park...or to visit a friend in one of the hotels off Olympic Boulevard.... just up the road
This is a high traffic station serving two train lines. It gets crowded and this is a rougher part of LA so there's usually something 'interesting' going on. There's usually a high police presence inside and out and most days vendors are spread out all around selling everything from clothes to crystals to electriconics. This was one of the top rated Metro Stations in terms of social equity. It's most definitely not the prettiest though.
