It's a clean gym that is very small and with limited equipment that's about 30-40 years old. It's usually very crowded no matter what time you go just because it's very limited on space. Since I really don't like waiting on the equipment, I usually go to San Ramon instead. That gym is huge with loads of machines and weights. I think the CV location needs to move somewhere bigger to accommodate the demand and remodel as well.
This is a gym and it has heavy weight. You need to lift heavy weight? You can do that here. The good? The staff was nice. The bad? Lots of broken machines, and there was maybe 6 people out of the several hundred I saw at the gym actually wiped off the machines. So that is gross. Also, the smell of red onions and greasy bacon waft over to the group workout room from the adjacent subway. Maybe you are into that, but just thought you should know.
This is has been my regular gym for the last 2 months. When we first started going here it seemed like a hidden gem and we're excited to go. Absolutely loved the location being next to Safeway so we could go grocery shopping after. The employees have always been nice and it wasn't always crazy busy. But over time it's gotten absolutely insane. 3/4 of the time I can't get on a treadmill at all because 4-7 have always been broken and there's 14. So I started doing the stairmasters. Then 5 out of 6 were out of commission for a while but luckily 4 were fixed but now those are busy because of the treadmills. If you wanna do any free weights, forget about it. I still love the employees but I've noticed when I tell them a part of a machine is broken, it's a 50/50 on if anything is done about it. I'm thinking the maintenance person maybe doesn't get enough hours or the response time on parts is terrible so I don't wanna completely knock them down. I do wish this gym was open more hours because the closest '24 hour' 24 hour fitness is at bayfair and that one is a no for me.
Lets break it down: Pros: Good if youre looking for a quick workout. Specific times of the day, you dont see as much people working out. Cons: The place is small - cramped workout areas which allows few equipments for use. Only has 2 barbell benches, 1 barbell squat area, 1 powerlifting station, 1 smith machine, and the rest are dumbells, cables, and other isolation machines. They have a separate cardio area and a studio. Dont know about womens area, but the men's are quite dirty. Im sorry, the entire gym rather has cleanliness issues. Some equipments are old and are rotting fyi the leg press machine esp. Lastly, the staff. Most of the ladies in the counter are very welcoming and light, yet the men are okay. Could easily smile, but seems like they need to have a vacation. What I would love to see a coach thats very nice. The PT two men, have attitude issues. Both carry themselves high, which they both deserve with high praise, but forget that they're just like everyone else - people. I was thinking of getting one of the coaches to train me, but after an incident where the gym trainer just ignored me, I would rather watch chris elkin or matt ogus lol. The incident was, the asian coach was resting before his set, I asked if he was using the bench on the side of his area, and he stared me in the eye through the mirror in front of him and just went and did his workout. Like seriously - narcissist and egomaniac.
I personally love this place. I go here with my sister, the gym is clean, the workers there are super nice and they have every machine and free weight there that you need.
This 24hr doesn't get packed it's busten out the box at 5:00 pm. Too little equipment for that many people. People wait in lines to use a machine while 1 guy is taking his time. God forbid he asked the guy "hey can I work in?" No gym etiquette at all. Milpitas needs a larger gym and more equipment.
I enjoy coming to this facility. 1 it’s close to home and 2 it has everything I need to get a good workout. I enjoy going early to avoid the crowds. The staff that open the gym Mon.-Fri. are always friendly and welcoming. I feel they are more welcoming than the later staff, but that’s just my opinion. Excited to see what it will look like after renovations!
The people and the staff at this gym is great, but the facility is small and underequipped, with machines often breaking down and never actually being repaired. There are only two flat benches and two squat racks one of which has the only deadlift platform. In my experience, unless I go really early in the morning, I have to wait long periods of time to use equipment. On some unfortunate occasions, my entire workout has been ruined by this. Apparently they are currently renovating the facility, so hopefully they address these issues.
TLDR: Confusing Maintenance with Renovations/Upgrades. Taking advantage of a loyal customer base and management refuses to do more than the bare minimum. Hello! I just wanted to start the review off by stating that I have been regularly attending this gym for the past year, five days a week. Additionally, I attended this facility off and on throughout my high school years as well. I still intend to utilize this gym until I get the time to research a better alternative. I am not an individual to go out of my way and write reviews, but I was particularly inspired by their recent 'upgrades' to this facility. Pros: -The Staff are very welcoming and polite for the most part. They remember regulars and treat the guests with integrity, often walking around the facility simply to re rack weights. - The community in which this gym is based is largely the reason I feel personally it has been able to stick around despite it's outdated nature. I, personally, have not had any negative interactions while exercising here Cons: - Firstly, this does not have to do with Castro Valley 24 Hour specifically, but they did fail to mention a semi-annual fee as well as other hidden rates that I was not aware of when initially creating a membership. My younger sister age 23 is paying 34$ monthly versus my $47 despite having the exact same perks. - In this current meta of misinformation and predatory marketing, when I was told the gym I frequented for years would be receiving upgrades, I was ecstatic. This facility has stayed nearly identical during the near two decades I have visited. With only a closing timeline of less than a week, I truly wondered what they could possible accomplish in that time. Perhaps AC? New Weights? Nope, we got some signs and basic maintenance. Maintenance is not renovating or upgrading. They retiled the locked rooms, fixed some machines and called it a day. There is nothing 'new' about the gym at all. Perhaps I am being to judgmental :D. -During the week the gym was "renovating", I spent the time attending the other 24 hour gyms in the bay area only to find Castro Valley lacks many of the modern accommodations found elsewhere. Rarely have I seen the introduction of a new machine or a repair that's permanent. Nothing wrong with old machines as they get the job done, but after decades of business you'd think that at least some visible change would be present. Perhaps not. For a gym that heavily relies on regular members it was a bit disappointing to see nothing really was done. The same tricep dip machine is going to be broken once a week, and summers in this gym continue to be torture. I love working out here and only wish that signs of growth would follow.
For a small gym, this place has more variety of machines and particularly abdominal machines than almost any other gym I have been to. The staff are friendly and it's kept relatively clean. The only thing I would observe is that too many people seem to feel that covering your mouth and leaving your nose. Uncovered is adequate in terms of face masks. Make sure you bring a good quality one yourself at least until omicron is no longer a thing.
