Description

The Amathole Museum, a Natural and Cultural History Museum, has an international reputation, and is situated in King Williams Town, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. It was founded in 1884.
Idabi lenkululeko eQonce is a permanent installation, telling the story of the Struggle for freedom in this area. Stories are recounted by people who lived through the Bhisho Massarce, forced removals and the UDF. You can hear the recordings with the use of QR codes on your smart phone.
The Xhosa Gallery displays depicts aspects of Historical Xhosa life.
Not to be missed exhibitions include Huberta the wandering hippo, and the small, and big, five of the Animal Kingdom
Behind the doors of historic buildings, the museum houses material which is of great scientific, historical and anthropological value to researchers.
The name of the museum has changed twice. In the spirit of transformation, the name was changed in 1999 from Kaffrarian to Amathole. The latter term refers to calves on the Mathole mountains.

Unfortunately this institution is still a work in progress during ongoing renovations and it’s a bit chaotic there. However, Curator, Dr Stephanie Victor, keeps the cogs in motion and continues to be extremely helpful even under challenging circumstances.
Wowww, place is well looked after, intense history and beautiful people as guides.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Huberta is still there. Not bad, but like most other museums in SA, not at the top of our government's list wrt maintenance and repairs.... Staff helpful and friendly and very cheap to enter. I loved it.
Natural history was ok. All exhibits of German settlers, South African history, World War and Kaffrarian history and general history of the development of the area totally eradicated. No exhibits allowed due to "transformation" by the current historian. Total waste of a journey. Just Huberta otherwise there is a Xhosa Gallery and a Missionary Museum. Racism in its worst form at government level.
As a researcher, the use of the museum collection was a good experience unfortunately did not have the time to tour the exhibitions.
It seems as if the museum with a dark somber atmosphere has been raided.
Kids loved the natural museum and I enjoyed learning about the local history. We had our very own tour guide too!
Very clean, very informative, very friendly staff
The staff doesn't know the entrance fee and operating hours. And no one picks up the phone to help us with info. Very pathetic!
I loved the place. SV was excellent and knows her story....AWESOMENESS
