Situated in the heart of Newlands Village, Basilico first started serving homemade Italian dishes to the local community in October 1999. Over the years, by serving simple, affordable and wholesome Italian food in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, it has become a busy family-orientated restaurant loved by the neighbourhood.
Anthony Bounds originally founded the small single floor restaurant and fell in love with one of his waitresses, Krista. When a fire broke out in the restaurant on its tenth anniversary, he turned the tragedy into a blessing. He closed the restaurant to refurbish and extend it, and was heavily involved in its redesign. But he also took some time off to marry the love of his life, Krista.
The end result is a brilliantly designed, double-story, 100-seater restaurant with a contemporary bar and modern kitchen. And a beautiful baby daughter called Megan.
All of the original staff stayed on for the launch of the new restaurant, a firm testament to its happy and loving work environment. It is this team spirit, love and passion that are the secret ingredients in every dish that comes out of the Basilico kitchen.
From our delicious wood-fired pizzas to our gourmet salads and homemade pastas, your taste buds will not be disappointed. Or choose from our weekly specials menu which offers inspired dishes such as springbok, avo, pine nut and pecorino salad; tempting slow-roasted lamb shank in a red-wine reduction with buttery mash; or pizza with a difference laden with bacon, blue cheese and pear. But remember to leave some room for Krista’s homemade chocolate and pecan brownies with ice cream.
