What is Pilates and how can i benefit from it?
Daily tasks and activities wreak havoc on our bodies. From sitting at a computer for hours, carrying heavy work equipment, carrying a child on one hip and a heavy bag on the other shoulder, playing cricket--these demands are often repetitive and one-sided, causing us to favour one group of muscles over others. This can lead to imbalances in our movement and body structure. The good news is that you can avoid/improve it by doing Pilates.
Pilates is a form of movement designed to ease and correct these imbalances. It is a brilliant foundation to any sport or activity from running to horse riding.
The focal point of Pilates is the "Core." The primary muscles of the core--the transversus abdominus, multifidus, pelvic floor and diaphragm--encompass and support the torso like a corset. Every exercise is initiated from the core and flows outward to the extremities. Learning to use these muscles to stabilize the pelvis and lumbar spine is essential to counter the increased incidence of chronic back pain and postural alignment stressors. It is a true mind-body workout as one needs to focus on engaging and recruiting the correct muscles. Awareness of your body in relation to space, the equipment/apparatus and its skeletal structure bring complete congruence to the movement and balance within the muscular system.
As one begins to feel and truly connect with the exercise as does ones flexibility, strength and mobilisation increase. The Exercises just get better and better as your short muscles lengthen and weak muscles strengthen.
