Borage Bistro

About

At Borage we always do our best to offer meals that are made with seasonal ingredients, fusing Capetonian influence with modern European cuisine.

Description

Borage Bistro is casual excellence made real.

The brainchild of entrepreneur Christian Vaatz and long time friend Frank Marks, is situated in the Portside Tower- Cape Town’s new tallest building- and aims to combine the afropolitan and multi-cultural persona of our beloved Mother City.
The culinary mission is clear to everyone who enters the seemingly industrial and urban premises: To combine modern European cuisine with simplicity, spicing it up with a homely and casual service concept and serving it on a hot plate, while focussing on best quality on every level.

I had a really fantastic dinner here. True fine dining, tucked into central Cape Town's business district. The menu is short, focussed and features numerous incredibly delicious options. The roast pineapple and coconut dessert was a real, fresh show stopper at the end. Decently priced and they serve craft beer, for those of us inclined.
Disappointing food, poor service and over priced. The head chef was apparently still at the gym that was genuinely the excuse our waiter gave when we wanted to order and, as a result, a number of the menu items could not be served as the head chef had not approved them. With only 6 main-meal options, not being able to serve a few items significantly reduced the menu. 3 of us eventually ordered the Mushroom Risotto for our main meal. I would classify it's size as a starter portion, the rice was under cooked and it included approximately 2 diced mushrooms. We didn't stay for dessert and I won't be back again.
In December last year 2015 we joined the "Supperclub" at Borage Bistro. Interesting concept for Cape Town: Communal Eating... A set three-course-meal is served simultaneously to all guests the menu is advertised several days prior to the event - alternatives can be arranged where necessary and guests share tables with fellow diners. I find that locals in Cape Town and South Africans in general tend to keep to themselves, and this concept felt a little strange at first... But with fantastic food, a very acceptable price R150 for three courses, a decent wine selection and friendly service, it turned out to be one of the best evenings we had this summer! We'll keep an eye out for the next supper club and will definitely join again when we're back in Cape Town!
Nice decor, with outside seating area & inside good view of kitchen always good. Menu bistro style. My risotto was on small side and very salty R100 . My husband had 2 pieces of bread with cubes of ham and melted cheese!R65. No sides, no extra's. I.e: Boring, small portions & overpriced.
The food was ok but most items were out of stock.
Used to be amazing!!! Now it's just okay.
Breakfast was ok. Friendly staff.
