We had to rush our 14 year old cat Socks to your practice after discovering a large gash in his abdomen. Wow what great service we received from the receptionist and the vet. We didn't have to wait long at all before we were seen. Thank you guys so much for the very detailed daily updates from the vets and nurses we really appreciate it. Thankfully our boy is now home and recovering well. I will definitely recommend your vet to anyone. Well done. And all the best for the new year.
Pro's: open 24 hours, only 2km from our home and *generally* experienced vets. Cons: hefty deposits been here 3 times in emergencies, R5-R8k upfront, icy chairs, perfunctory and ever changing young vets at night, long waiting times, not the best communication. Our baby died in their arms and they did not bother to even clean the vomit out of his nostril before we got there to say goodbye to his lifeless body. I had to do so while literally dripping tears onto him. Now waiting and waiting to hear the outcome of his lab tests postmortem so that we can at least know what took our youngest son away from us so soon. Huge difference from our family vet in Parkmore who treat our children like precious beings. But I guess that is the nature of a hospital?? Funny, all these vets come from the same Alma Mater. Guess it always comes down to over ... Our child was cremated 22 March. I phoned on 24 March to ask if we could collect his ashes. Receptionist said the person responsible for ashes would contact me. Waited and waited. Phoned again 31 March, ashes were there. Nobody bothered to let us know. Great empathy and service hey. Such thankless care. Gotta find a more caring emergency hospital. Go to Fourways vet hospital. Same prices, more empathy, less callous and money grubbing. Dis one ain't worth it. Not at all.
I think BVH are expensive but what emergency hospital isn’t, animal or human? They have always been very upfront with me about what it would cost, phoned me with updates and even called me to visit after the vet has finished their shift. Dr Chad waited for me and let me sit with my Bruce for 30min after he had finished his work day. They always go over and beyond to try help or save my animals. I have taken many fosters to them and my own personal pets. I find they are very direct and honest, when in life threatening situations I appreciate. I lost an animal this year and I regret not taking her to BVH. Their facilities are vast and they have the equipment to help right there. No having to send your dog to another vet just to check it’s heart. They do it straight away. The late night staff always take my calls to check in and have always treated me with the utmost respect. I think we sometimes forget that they are faced with horrific things daily. We have all heard of callous Dr or Surgeon in normal hospitals, why do we expect anything different from a Vet?
Our little angel Evie was born with a funny leg. She had to have an op to straighten it. The surgeon had less than 5mm of bone to work with since she’s so small. They performed an extremely complex and intricate operation perfectly. Our baby is healthy and happy again! Thank you so so much to all the staff who cared for her with so much heart! They also cared for me- I was terrified and they treated me with kindness and professionalism. I could not be happier with the service I received! The knowledge and skills available at this hospital are unparalleled. Thanks again to everyone at BVH!
Thank you to everyone for taking such good care of Dexter. We were always greeted with a friendly smile. We were kept up to date with daily phone calls on Dexter’s condition. We could visit Dex everyday. He was always well taken care of. Thank you Dr Roelof and Dr Leigh for your kindness and compassion. Thank you all the reception staff for your care.
If you are looking at reviews because you are anxious about your pet going in / being at BVH. This is an extremely realistic case. Our cat spent SEVEN days in the ICU at Bryanston Hospital after we had to rush him in following our Parkmore Vet suggestion for a blocked bladder. Our Parkmore vets were quite adamant with sedation and a catheter he should be okay, and we opted for Bryanston for the 24 hour care as my cat had never been in hospital before. Being distraught at this possibility, we get to BVH, they don’t even look at Cola, they take him from us and tell us that we need to pay R4000 deposit right now and we’re looking at R20 000 over all. 2 hours later, we are told they cannot put a catheter up and will have to perform a life altering surgery. Of course it’s a matter of life or death so we said yes. They didn’t allow us to see cola for three days or rather “didn’t advise”. Something I wish I never listened to. He had many post op-complication’s. When we eventually got to see him they nick- named him “Aggro” on his cage and every time we called in to ask for an update they never failed to mention how difficult he was and that they couldn’t even touch him. Leaving us as owners feeling completely untrusting of who he was being “cared” for by. His catheter came out a day late because the vet was too busy to take it out causing an extra day in hospital. When I finally put my foot down and said I’m going to take him because he’s clearly feeling extremely unsafe & uncomfortable there, they told me I have to pay R25 000 before he can be released and I don’t even have 30 days to settle the bill. Following that ordeal, the surgery didn’t even work as it should have! It took Cola 3 weeks to pee on his own, having to go to our dedicated Parkmore vet EVERY 48 HOURS to be sedated and have his bladder expressed along with daily medication. I can’t help but feel the prolonged mental trauma of being at BVH caused this. While we are grateful that Bryanston acted swiftly in the long term and saved our cat, the lack of sympathy towards clients and “difficult pets” is something that needs to be looked at. Furthermore, please consider that once your pet goes in, it may be a while before they come out! We thank the few nurses who eventually persisted with Cola and saw his true kind nature. He is finally after 5 excruciating weeks, back to his normal happy self.
We took our doggie in after hours as I thought he may have had a seizure because of how his eyes were15 years old jack Russell I told the vet what my concerns are as well as informing that he has a injury under the eye which is also clearly visible. The vet said no doesn't seem that way and just said it is infected a bit and then said she just wants to check something quick. She took out doggie to the back and She proceeded to do a test without our consent, a test we now had to pay for, a glaucoma test 1am in the morning, a test my vet could have done in normal consultation hours. A test we did not give permission to do. We were stunned. Its already a very expensive trip, doing tests without informing us that she was going to do them as she just wanted to see something, thinking she needs better light or whatever to see the wound better and no consent from us to actually do a test. Getting completely side tracked from why we are there, saying all kinds of things getting us paranoid and just wanting to add more to the bill tests wise, then ended up sending us home with a salve that is NOT recommended to put on a wound so close to the eye, which could actually cause more damage. Aside from having us all paranoid and scared about normal senior dog ailments, we now had to pay for an extra service. This morning I went back to my normal vet as what was said to us just didn't sit right with us and got the Correct meds. Why were we not asked first before performing the glaucoma test? We would definitely not have given consent to spend that amount of money on something that was not needed after hours. We were there for something we thought was an emergency, which obviously wasn't and we could have gone home and taken our doggie to his normal vet at a much affordable rate for further tests if he felt it was needed. Felt like a money chasing consultation more than a caring one. Never again
I'm horrified by how my boy Churchill and I were treated at the Bryanston Veterinary Hospital on Saturday morning. They refused to see Churchill in an emergency because they were short-staffed. I was turned away and told to go to Fourways Vet. I was the only person at the hospital waiting to see the vet. At 7am in the morning. The vets refused to come out because they were doing their rounds. Even the receptionists were horrified that the vets wouldn't help. They went back to ask twice and the vets refused. The one receptionist told me that she was embarrassed and had no words because they are meant to help in emergencies. Rather take your furchild somewhere else. Awful hospital. BVH is turning into the government hospital of pet care, with private hospital rates.
Upfront I must say that I/my GSD were taken through for an examination of my dogs hips promptly and professionally at 09h00. A deposit was paid of R2000 as my GSD required x-rays needing sedation as well as a clinical evaluation. Riley my GSD was only x-rayed at around 15h00 when we had expected to collect her, but so be it. We collected her at 18h30 with the delay being paperwork - I has assumed this to be a report and recommendation but it appears it was the invoice - which I've still not received despite requesting this several times but no further payment was requested. So..again, OK. We phoned the next day and asked for the vet Dr. Pretorius to phone me. He didn't. He did phone my daughter and discussed Riley's case but that wasn't what was stipulated to be done. I phoned again and again and again and again you get the picture here asking for the scans, the report and written recommendation re a way forward. Four days later I received the clinical report and scans but no 'way forward'.....still no phone call. I've subsequently passed the report and scans on to another vet and asked for a recommendation as to treatment for Riley. Surely it is BVH's responsibility to offer a care plan and options or am I being unreasonable? Why will they not put this down on paper?
I cannot give this Vet practice a high enough score! If there was a 10 I would give it. They have just , on Christmas Day, saved my 15 year old Yorkie from a nasty respiratory problem after being attacked. A while ago my Border Collie cross Bella ate an entire pack of “Ecorat”, an extremely toxic and deadly poison and they literally saved her life . Their care and thoroughness stand alone. Thank you to Dr’s Jayde, Jandre, for rescuing Bella and also Dr Michelle and Chris who have been awesome with our fur children .
