Description

At the tip of the Cape Peninsula 60 km south-west of Cape Town, lies Cape Point; a declared Natural World Heritage Site. Encompassing 7 750 hectares of rich and varied flora and fauna; abounding with buck, baboons and Cape Mountain Zebra as well as over 250 species of birds, Cape Point is a nature enthusiast's paradise.

Rugged rocks and sheer cliffs towering more than 200 metres above the sea and cutting deep into the ocean, provide a spectacular background for the Parks’ rich bio-diversity. Cape Point falls within the southern section of Table Mountain National Park. The natural vegetation of the area, fynbos, comprises the smallest but richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms. The scenic beauty of Cape Point is not its sole allure; it is also an international icon of great historical interest with many a visitor drawn to the area because of its rich maritime history.

Apart from offering visitors an exciting and novel method of travel, taking the Flying Dutchman funicular saves visitors a long uphill walk from the car park to see the old lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic views.

The Flying Dutchman Funicular, also known as the Cape Point Funicular, is a funicular railway located at Cape Point. It is believed to be the only commercial funicular of its type in Africa, and takes its name from the local legend of the Flying Dutchman ghost ship.

The line runs from a lower station at the Cape Point car park, up an incline through dense fynbos to the upper lighthouse. The funicular leaves from the lower station every 3 minutes, comfortably accommodates 40 passengers per car, and can transport 450 persons to the upper lighthouse per hour, making it the ideal way to whisk closer to the lighthouse even during peak times.

The Two Oceans Restaurant occupies an enviable position above False Bay at the southwestern tip of Africa. The restaurant is as famous for its seafood cuisine as it is for a superb wooden deck that looks out onto one of the most stunning ocean views in South Africa.

A truly incredible and humbling experience. The views cannot be described in words. The hiking trails are amazing and the views will leave you speechless. I will definitely visit again.
Went as a family to visit this wonderful gem! It was absolute ethereal beauty with pristine views and exquisite dynamics that captivates you in every possible way. We went on a day with perfect weather and entered the gates of the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve in high spirits and pure excitement. Use the bathroom by the base before commencing the walk up. Take hats, water, sunscreen and phone or camera. We found the walk up fairly easy and quick, but if you want to take the Flying Dutchman, it will be even faster. Little trails that branch out from the main pavement develop into even better opportunities to enjoy the scenery and take pictures as memories, and once you reach the lighthouse at the top, there is the famous non- official line where the two oceans meet. Even though Cape Agulhas officially holds the title for the most southern tip of the African continent and also where the geographical division of the cold Atlantic Ocean and the warm Indian Ocean is situated, you can still see the different coloured oceans on either side from the Cape Point lighthouse. Enjoy the many ancient infrastures and indigenous plants before you enjoy a hearty meal at the base restuarant, and while you at it...why not get souvenirs and gifts from the retail store as well? While you drive down the main route, turn into the few little lanes, since there may be animals waiting for you, such as ostriches, zebras, antelopes or even baboons. Some of these roads also lead to tidal pools and stunning picnic destinations ideal for the whole family. Situated within the same nature reserve as Table Mountain, you can first give Muizenberg Beach, Fish Hoek, Simon's Town and Boulders Beach, or aka the False Bay Tour a visit before heading towards Cape Point. You can then return in land and go towards Scarborough, Kommetjie, Imhoff and then Hout Bay. With the cliffs rising over 235m, the landscapes in all directions just scream out one of the most breathtaking backdrops ever, so take plenty of pictures: If you local or international, please give this attraction a visit, guaranteed you will not have even the slightest disappointment once you witness this flawless spectacle. Till next time. Take care Jia-yu
The climb/hike up to the lighthouse half killed me I'm so unfit, so many stairs, but the spectacular views from the lighthouse made it totally worth it! It really is an incredible sight to behold!!
Beautiful park. The view up there is really impressive and scenic. In the park you can see some zebras, ostrichs, eland, etc …. Definitively worth it. You will need a 2-4 hours to do it all.
A must visit in Cape Town. Had an awesome time with my boyfriend . Get there early so you can cover all the amazing sites. Breathtaking views of the continent’s tip. I’d visit everyday If I could
What an amazing view!!! The first thing to see if you are visiting cape town
Great place to spend the day. Tidal pools, beaches. More than one spot to have a braai and a swim. The tidal pools are great. Lots of wildlife to see, baboons, ostriches and many more.
Amazing views Amazing beaches and hiking trails Diverse animal life Use of a wild cardgreen card is recommended due to paying cash being expensive
Had a great day trip to cape point, just a few hour drive from the city of Cape Town. The scenery is just breathtaking from the top. The beautiful mountains and the sea connecting to the land, just amazing. The place if very popular among tourists so it gets very busy during peak seasons. Can’t wait to go back again.
If you have wild card, free entry. Take walking shoes. You can also go to the beach. We walked to the furthest point . Lots of steps. But lovely views and a must do. You can also stay over .
