Our approach is one of co-investment and community involvement, where local communities and local organisations are also encouraged to commit time, energy and basic resources to the projects. Gap Year South Africa Projects are owned by local communities and local organisations and a stringent operational code of conduct is always adhered too. This encourages a two-way commitment and investment both from the local community and local organisation as well as the volunteer or donor.
Our model avoids creating a mindset of dependency but rather builds self sustainability within under-resourced schools and communities. The intended beneficiaries of our projects are young people who have inherently been afforded very little exceptional opportunity. Working with local communities, we aim to empower underprivileged young people with the essential life skills to become future values-based leaders of development in their own communities.
Gap Year South Africa Internships offer students an opportunity to learn outside the formality of a classroom by opening them up to real world careers and the challenges they may face on a daily basis. An internship will enhance a students understanding of an industry, broaden their understanding of how business works and better prepare them for further education or employment.
Our mission is to contribute to social and economic development and address priority areas such as moral regeneration and social cohesion within under resourced communities in South Africa. This is achieved through our volunteer projects in local primary schools with the intended beneficiaries of our projects being young people who have inherently been afforded very little exceptional opportunity.
Gap Year South Africa offers 3 week, 5 week, 3 month and 5 month project options in Cape Town, South Africa. Our volunteer projects include Community Development (school support, tutoring and mentoring, edu-care support, women’s club, Life Exchange, HIV prevention and performing arts), Sports Coaching, Hillsong Africa Foundation Community Outreach, Ultimate Ocean Adventure (Scuba diving and Surfing) and Surfing Projects.
