HALO is a non-profit company reg number 2016/126596/08 which runs a community-based health education programme designed to increase the awareness, prevention and early detection of all lifestyle related diseases such as cancer, diabetes and more.
At least half of all lifestyle related diseases are preventable. Thus HALO stands for:

H – Healthy mind, healthy body
A – Active Lifestyle

Included in this is addressing the emotional and mental stresses that can lead to many of these illnesses and therefore assist in Healthy Behavior Changes resulting in Healthier Lifestyle Choices.
More than 52 percent of all Chronic lifestyle Diseases – Non-Communicable Diseases- NCDs are caused by Unhealthy Lifestyle Choices and Stress. These are on the rise World Wide and particularly here in South Africa. According to The World Health Organisation there are 3 major risk factors or behavior’s that lead to the 4 major diseases that cause 50 percent of deaths.
These 3 Risk Factors are; Inactivity, Smoking and Unhealthy Eating. The major disease that this leads to is Cardio Vascular Disease, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Lung Diseases, High Cholesterol, and Cancer.
According to Dr. Mike Evans, a Physician from St Michael’s Hospital and Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Toronto, EXCERISE IS MEDICINE.

Over and above this the other risk factors include environmental conditions and not going for health screenings such as pap smears, breast examinations, testicle examinations and later prostate.

All these Diseases are Controllable and Preventable through Education, leading to Healthy Lifestyle Choices and Early Detection, thus cutting the cost of Government Health Care.
Prevention offers the most cost-effective, long-term strategy.

HALO’s vision is to equip communities with the correct information so as to be aware of the Importance of making Healthy Lifestyle Choices which include Healthy Food Choices, Cooking Methods, Exercise etc as well as the importance of Early Detection through Health Screenings at the nearest clinics, self-examinations and recognition of symptoms. Thereby assisting people in recognizing the protocols in place.

Although these healthy choices are made by individuals, they may be facilitated or impeded by the social, physical, economic, and regulatory environment in which people live. Community efforts are therefore essential to create an environment that facilitates Healthy Food Choices and Physical Activity.
By providing access to information and support in communities, HALO aims to contribute to the dramatic improvement in the overall community wellbeing as well as a significant positive impact on the reduction of healthcare costs and a longer, healthier lifespan. Making healthier food choices does not mean it will be more costly.

HALO's feeding programme provides much needed refreshments to Day Patients and their Care Givers at Oncology Ward 495 Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

Currently HALO is only able to do the feeding program on a Tuesday due to limited resources.
Pick and Pay Brightwater Commons donates bread for Tuesdays' but we still have to purchase all the other items that are required; peanut butter, jam, tea, rooibos tea, milk, sugar, honey and ginger tea and if funds are available ginger biscuits as this helps with the nausea experienced by patients after receiving chemotherapy.
Dietary advice is also shared with patients as it is a very important factor once being diagnosed with cancer and while having chemo therapy. This is also very important for future health.

The clinic is open 5 days a week and on a daily basis between 90 to a 150 patients attend the Oncology Clinic.

Together the UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT we partnered on Mandela Day 2015 and provided delicious soup and bread to about 500 patients at Radiation, the Breast Clinic and Oncology Ward 495. Together this was repeated on Mandela Day 2016.
UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT also provided a huge amount of groceries for the feeding program in 2015.
Students volunteer on Tuesday’s with serving refreshments.
Susan was also one of 10 women, at UJ’s COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Women’s Day Celebration 2015, that were honoured for their contribution to the community and received pendants that were designed and handmade by UJ students

HALO depend on donations and volunteers to enable us to SUSTAIN and EXPAND this program as well as the program run by Archie Radebe, who is a member of HALO, Men’s Prostate Awareness Group in Soweto.
