Description

The Honoured Dead Memorial is a provincial heritage site in Kimberley in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is situated at the meeting point of five roads, and commemorates those who died defending the city during the Siege of Kimberley in the Anglo-Boer War.In 1986, it was described in the Government Gazette asRhodes sent Baker to Greece to study ancient memorials - the Nereid Monument at Xanthus greatly influenced his design. The monument is built of sandstone quarried in the Matopo Hills in Zimbabwe and is the tomb of 27 soldiers. It features an inscription that Rhodes specifically commissioned Rudyard Kipling to write. The Long Cecil gun that was designed and manufactured by George Labram in the workshops of De Beers during the siege is mounted on its stylobate (facing the Free State). It is surrounded by shells from the Boer Long Tom. The memorial was dedicated on 28 November 1904. It was vandalised in 2010 when brass fittings were broken off parts of the gun.

A magnificent sight to behold with a striking presence as one approaches from any of the directions leading to the intersection. Unsurprisingly vandalised very badly few respect history in RSA, but yet, a must see. This canon, commissioned by Cecil John Rhodes, was constructed by mineworkers for use against the Boers during the infamous “Siege of Kimberly” during the Second Anglo Boer War. A piece of history which we should look after much better than we have so far.
Beautiful Herbert Baker example. As impressive as it is poignant. The canon on front is called "Long Cecil" and was made in the mining workshop to defend the town against the Boers. Look for the lathe turning marks on the barrel. Pity about the graffiti.
We need to do better! Hardly a way to remember the dead. Graffiti and run down. Sadly we just took a pic from afar.
Needs a garden around the memorial or a couple of creepers to make it green. Great architecture though. Now the merging of five roads, but once, the siege of Kimberley.
A really amazing monument to see im happy to see it still standing
Yet another monument reflecting the diamond struggle and life lost,
Beautiful heritage site in Kimberley
This memorial has a lot, it has always been a wonderful spot for photos for me and my friends. It's a must be place, just to snap a few pics
The beauty of the monument is ruined by the lack of maintenance and care. COME ON KIMBERLEY. YOU CAN DO BETTER
