We had such an amazing experience with Umgeni Steam Train at Inchanga Station. It was our first time on a train and we loved every second of it. My kids were so excited and happy. The staff were friendly and helpful. The market was also so lovely, there was food, drinks and snack options as well as enough chairs to sit on. Some of the lines to stalls were a bit long and took time which is understandable considering the amount of people that came. There was also a jungle gym for kids to play on. Plenty of parking was available and there are toilets on site which were clean. With it being winter it was cold so definitely dress warm or carry jackets. I would definitely recommend paying them a visit
A Wonderful place for the family especially the kids will enjoy it. Had a picnic. Tables and chairs provided. Nice foods, craft stalls. Great train ride on Board Wesley. Beautiful sceneries of the landscapes. Historical museum of trains. Definitely a must to do and go to. Loved it. Wonderful train staff.
The train ride is absolutely amazing. The train is authentic and still running like it used to from 100 years ago. The conductors to the ticket masters treat u with the respect and make the experience memorable. The train is big and comfortable and the ride is something else. The conductors ask u scream while passing through the tunnels, that was so great and fun. We got to inchanga station and there was a flee market and food stall which was great. Nb. Not all stalls take cards plenty, so make sure u have cash on hand. Price R290 per person about 20 USD dollars I highly recommend the place as it's something that links us to the past and gives a great feeling of nostalgia. Kids love the crazy and watching the valley of 1000 hills and horse and cows grazing are all part of the journey. Toilets are clean
Always special with family. Plenty of food and beverage stalls at Inchanga station. Horse rides, Music, arts and craft stalls, coffee bar and even beers and ciders can be found there. We enjoyed a 30 min. train trip from Inchanga Station to Bothashill Station. Here the train stops for about 15 min to stretch legs before heading back to Inchanga Station. The kids really enjoyed this outing while the parents just relaxed. highly recommended.
Finally we did it! We have traveled on the Umgeni Steam Railway!!! And it was worth it... The main station was clean, staff were polite and friendly and delicious food and good music... Well done guys. The only one flaw was the stop at Botha's Hill was messy, with lots of garbage lying all around.
I've always wanted to go but never actually followed through. I am passionated about trains in general, esp Steam Locomotives and my partner offered to take me for the day as an early birthday present. It was the best birthday present I have ever received. The day was just filled with excitement for both of us. We ended the day with a 1hr 15min train ride on a class 12D steam locomotive. The team behind the scenes have done an incredible job at restoring the locomotive and cars. Plus a lovely museum in the old station masters house. The rail yard had so much old rolling stock and we walk around for hours just looking into this incredible history. It was so nice to meet people who share my passion. Can't wait to go again.
Long wait for a half hr journey. Could be more organized.long lines for food. Overall fair day out of the house. Also big kudos to the historians trying to maintain the steam Train business.
So grateful that I got to have a different experience of the organisation than the normal. My children and I were treated to a tour of the Inchanga Station, including the various buildings, the workshop and the locomotive. The caretaker gave us a history lesson on the development of rail transportation in Durban, which influenced and was itself influenced by developments in other parts of the country. The main drivers of the developments were increasing industrialisation and Durban’s position as a strategically located port. An interesting fact we learned was that Winston Churchill once passed through the station as a journalist and before he became the prime minister of England. In the workshop, it was heartwarming to see the volunteers who give freely of their time to keep the locomotive running, hard at work. It is a labour of love for these individuals, with their concern being to maintain our heritage in regard to the role of steam rail transportation. I have great respect and admiration for the members of the rail club who keep this operation running. All power to them and May the club grow from strength to strength!
Kids loved the experience but the adults loved it more. Was like being transported back in time. My 7yr old can't wait to go again. Totally worth it
Beautiful experience. Well organized. All in All, wonderful outing for the family, especially kids who love steam engines.
